Don't string me up straight away for this comment. Hear me out.

This phrase (the title) came up in a letter-to-the-editor in the Sydney Morning Herald (don't live there but I buy the paper because Brisbane is a shithole) on the weekend, and it got me thinking.

Australia did get the government it deserved. Everyone was bitching and moaning about the election results around me, because they all voted Greens or Labour. And yet, before the election, every chance I saw people trying to actually talk about the election, politics or society in general was cut off by other people in the group.

I don't understand or respect the "don't talk about religion or politics" bullshit. I think it's crap and should be done away with if we ever want to improve society. My mother is especially guilty of this, and I fucking hate it when she does it, and always get angry when she tries to change the subject/shut it down in such a conversation. There seems to be this idea in society that the best way to encourage political democracy is to let everyone find the facts out for themselves, not talk about it, and let it be private.

Fuck. That.

There was no proper debate encouraged by either side of the political spectrum, and the official "debate" on TV was a fucking joke. And so we ended up with Howard back in power with his freaky-ass eyebrows.

Yes, this is my version of an angry-little-rant. The tiny itty bitty bit of righteous anger I felt at the Australian people underneath my facade of cynicism.

So yeah. The public gets what it deserves.

I've been saying that for years and years. It's proving to be 100% right, in that the "you" is a collective you and not reflective on the individual you.
