Well I finished my last day at the job yesterday, and I arrived in Austin this morning to look for an apartment. The roomie (Squian) has been working here for awhile now, so I'm sharing his motel room while the search is on. Hopefully by the end of the week we'll have a new place to move the rest of our stuff into.

Anyway, just checking in.

Far and away the best city in Texas. Good luck! If 'The Pit' is still open (I think it's on 5th street), e-mail me a brisket sandwich, please.

Thanks folks. We looked at two apartments and decided to take the second one. We'll find out tomorrow if the application was accepted (which shouldn't be a problem) then we can "move in" on Monday (ie. start ordering utilities, schedule the movers, etc.) I'll post pictures of the place here Monday or thereabouts if anyone's interested.

Yep and yep. Squian's company is paying for the movers, and they may be able to do it as early as Thursday/Friday. Gas will be activated tomorrow, electricity on Wednesday. No cable and Internet until the 27th, though.

I know I can't. If I can't get it done sooner I might have to stay in a sleeping bag in the old house for an extra week. Seriously.

I must be confused about all this time difference thing because I'm sure Monday's been and gone throughout the world, but I see no photos. Where are your priorities?

Thanks!

CC: Squian decided not to buy a house at this juncture. Not sure about the market.

The place looks bright and cool! ... Just the one room then?

viscousmemories
09-19-2006, 11:17 PM
The flashbulb makes it seem brighter than it really is. :D It's cozy, though. I'm going to love drinking coffee and writing on that patio, especially with the alleged deer among those trees.

I didn't upload pics of the beds/baths 'cause they're not terribly interesting. My bedroom is square with a regular closet and has a full bathroom in the hallway adjacent to it. Squian's bedroom is bigger with an attached bathroom and walk-in closet.

Do you guys have all the furniture you need?

viscousmemories

It's kind of a shag I think, so like it changes color when you pet it.

I hope that's not too technical a description. :giggle:

We have bedroom sets, a dining room table w/chairs and two Ikea lounge chairs for the living room, but that's it. I'm not sure if Ian is planning on buying a couch or anything, but I can't afford to.

It looks really comfortable, you guys!

Sounds like you'll need a table and chair for the patio first. :coffeepaper:
The smaller place should equate to lower utilities each month, too.

09-20-2006, 11:02 PM
I like it, except for the number of windows. The carpet could be better but at least it won't show dirt that much. The white doors on the kitchen cabinets look pretty bad. They should have left them with the wood grain. Having the patio facing a natural area is a nice touch and gives a more private feeling.

09-21-2006, 03:43 AM
I love the built-in bookshelves. The last house we lived in had some, plus little built-in nooks everywhere. Very cool.

Ymir's blood, those cabinets look just like the ones we had in an apartment. They were just a white laminate on particle board. Maybe that's what these are, too. No wood grain.

viscousmemories
09-21-2006, 06:15 AM
Yep, that's the cabinets in a nutshell freemonkey. Cheap laminate on old particle board.

It feels funny going from a fairly large, new, 4 br. 3 ba. house with a ginormous kitchen to this tiny, somewhat shabby apartment, but I'm looking forward to the lower AC bill and ease of cleaning, and I already feel more at home here in Austin than I did after two years in the Dallas area.

As to bookshelves which one would have to bring in from outside (i.e. not in the walls). C'mon, qb, get in the game! :P

I like all the windows, and that it is private behind you. A bonus when living in an apartment. You can go in and almost believe you are off to yourselves.

Carpets can easily disappear from the eye if you get the colors right in the furnishings. But in the case of an apartment, which usually is a temporary abode, this wouldn't be practical. It looks like it will be cozy. I agree with pesci about a table out on the deck. Couple of large tropical plants in pots and it will be nice!

Plants! What a surprising idea from Plant Woman. :giggle:

Actually a while back when the move was still in the "some day" stage I decided to get some plants, but I'd already forgotten about that decision. I've probably owned 2 plants in my life, if that. Now that you mention it though, large tropical plants on the patio are a must. :)

Another plus about this apartment is that it's built to condo standards, so there's 3 ft. of concrete between the apartments. When I was there the other day I noticed that I could hear my neighbor's tv from outside in front of the place, but when I walked in I couldn't hear it at all.

Anyway the movers are confirmed for Monday, so depending on how many other moves they have to do we'll be set up in the new crib by Tue, Wed. or Thur. :hyper:

We're back in Irving now. When they pack us on Monday they'll let us know if they'll be delivering on Tue, Wed. or Thursday. In any case Squian has to fly to Houston Tuesday afternoon, so I'll be driving down to meet the movers myself.
