Report from amnesty
Members of unofficial spiritual or religious groups, including some Qi Gong groups and unregistered Christian groups, continued to be arbitrarily detained, tortured and ill-treated.
Rhetoric intensified in the official media against the Falun Gong spiritual movement, which was banned as a ¡°heretical organization¡± in July 1999, apparently exacerbating the climate of violence and intolerance against the Falun Gong. Detained Falun Gong practitioners, including large numbers of women, were at risk of torture, including sexual abuse, particularly if they refused to renounce their beliefs. According to overseas Falun Gong sources, more than 800 people detained in connection with the Falun Gong had died since 1999, mostly as a result of torture or ill-treatment.
Deng Shiying reportedly died on 19 July, the day after her release from Jilin Women¡¯s Prison in Changchun City, Jilin Province, where she was serving a seven-year prison sentence in connection with producing and distributing information describing human rights violations against Falun Gong practitioners in China. According to Falun Gong sources, she was beaten by other inmates, apparently prompted by prison officials, shortly before her release.Whole article here:

Quote Mr. Li Hongzhi
Some Thoughts of Mine
Recently it was reported in the news that Mainland China seeks my extradition back to China in exchange for a reduction of USD$500 million worth of their trade surplus [with the U.S.]. I would like to say a few words about this. I only teach people to be good. At the same time, I unconditionally help people get rid of their diseases and health problems, and I enable them to reach higher realms of mind. I don't charge any money or ask for material things as reward. All of this has had a positive impact on the society and its people, and it has, on a large scale, turned people's hearts towards goodness and made their moral level high. I wonder if that is why they seek to extradite me. Do they want me to return to China so that more people can obtain the Fa and cultivate their hearts? If that's the case, please don't let the country lose USD$500 million to strike a deal--I can go back myself.
I have heard, however, that normally people who are extradited are war criminals, public enemies, or criminal offenders. If so, I wonder which of the above categories I would fit into.
In fact, I keep teaching people to conduct themselves with Truthfulness, Benevolence, and Forbearance as their guiding principles. So naturally, I have also been setting an example. When Falun Gong disciples and I have been criticized for no reason and treated unfairly, we have always displayed breadth of mind with great benevolence and great forbearance, and have silently endured everything in order to give the government sufficient time to find out what we are about. But this forbearance is absolutely not because the students of Falun Gong and I fear anything. You should know that once a person learns the truth and the real meaning of life, he will not regret giving up his life for it. Don't mistake our mercy or our great tolerance as fear and thereby intensify your reckless actions. These are actually people who have awakened, they are cultivators who have learned the true meaning of life. And don't label Falun Gong cultivators as engaging in "superstition," either. There are so many things that human beings and science have yet to understand. Don't religions also exist because of a belief in higher beings? Actually, the true religions and ancient beliefs in Gods, which have made it possible for the morality of human society to endure for several thousand years, are what has allowed for the existence of today's mankind--which includes you, me, the next person, and so on. If it weren't for these, mankind would have committed sins long ago that led to catastrophes, people's ancestral lines probably would have died out long ago, and there wouldn't be what there is today. The truth is, morality is extremely important for mankind. If man does not value virtue, he is capable of doing all kinds of bad things, which is terribly dangerous for mankind. This much I can tell people. Actually, my intention isn't to do something for society, and by no means do I want to get involved in ordinary human affairs, much less do I desire someone's political power. Not everyone considers power that important. Don't people have a saying, "Everybody aspires to something different"? I merely wish to let those who can do cultivation obtain the Fa, and to teach them how to truly improve their xinxing, that is, to improve their moral standard. Besides, not everyone will come to learn Falun Gong, and furthermore, what I'm doing is bound to have no connection with politics. Regardless, cultivators whose hearts have turned toward goodness and whose morals have improved are good for any country or nationality. How could something that helps people to get well and stay healthy, and that raises people's moral level, be labeled an "evil religion"? Every Falun Gong practitioner is a member of society, and each has his own job or career. It's only that they go to the park to do Falun Gong exercises for half an hour or an hour every morning, and then they go to work. We don't have various provisions that people have to follow, as religions do, nor do we have any temples, churches, or religious rituals. People can come to learn or leave as they please, and we have no membership rosters. How is it a religion? As to "evil," could teaching people to be good, not charging people money, and doing things to heal people and help them stay healthy be categorized as "evil"? Or, is something "evil" simply because it's outside the scope of the Communist Party's theories? Besides, I know that evil religion is evil religion, and it's not something a government determines. Should an evil religion be labeled "upright" if it's in keeping with the notions of certain people in the government? And should an upright one be labeled "evil" if it doesn't conform to their personal notions?
Actually, I know perfectly well why some people are bent on opposing Falun Gong. Just as reported by the media, there are too many people practicing Falun Gong. One hundred million people is indeed no small number. Yet why should having a large number of good people be feared? Isn't it true that the more good people there are, the better, and that the fewer the bad people, the better? I, Li Hongzhi, unconditionally help cultivators improve their morals and gain health, which brings about social stability and allows people to better serve the society with their able bodies. Isn't this benefiting the people in power? These things have, in fact, truly been achieved. Why is it that instead of thanking me, they want to set as many as 100 million people against the government? What government could be so unfathomable? Furthermore, who among these 100 million people doesn't have family, children, relatives, and friends? Is it a question of only 100 million people? So the number of people they are going against might be even more. What on earth has happened to "the leaders of my beloved land"? If with my, Li Hongzhi's, life I can dispel their fears of these good people, I will immediately go back and let them do what they will. Why "risk universal condemnation," waste manpower and capital, and use politics and money to pursue a deal that violates human rights? The United States, on the other hand, has been a leader in respecting human rights. So would the U.S. government betray human rights to make such a deal? Besides, I'm a U.S. permanent resident, a permanent resident who lives under the jurisdiction of U.S. law.
I don't mean to point fingers at anyone in particular. It's just that what they are doing makes too little sense to me. Why forgo a good opportunity to win public opinion, and instead set some 100 million people against the government?
It's said that many people went to Zhongnanhai, and that certain people were shocked and furious about it. In fact, the number of people who went wasn't large at all. Think about it: there are 100 million people practicing Falun Gong, and only ten thousand plus went--could you say that's a lot? There was no need to mobilize people: with 100 million some people, if one person wanted to go and so did the next, in no time there would be over ten thousand people. They had no slogans or banners, they didn't act out of line, and much less were they against the government. They merely wanted to report our situation to the government. What's wrong with doing that? Let me ask this: would any "protestors" behave as well as this? Aren't you moved even one bit when you see this? Yet you insist on trying to find some fault with Falun Gong. But the approach of trying to eradicate Falun Gong while disregarding all of its merits is really backward. Falun Gong isn't terrible, like certain people have imagined. Rather, it brings numerous benefits and doesn't do harm to any society. Losing the favor of the people, meanwhile, is what's most frightening. To be honest, the students of Falun Gong are also human beings who are in the process of cultivating themselves, and they still have human minds. In this situation where they are being treated unjustly, I'm not sure how much longer they can forbear it, and this is what I am most concerned about.
Li Hongzhi

Falun Dafa: A Brief Introduction
Falun Gong (also called Falun Dafa) is an ancient form of qigong, the practice of refining the body and mind through special exercises and meditation. Like tai chi, qigong is a vital part of many people's lives in Asia; almost every Chinese park is brimming by the break of dawn with people practicing these arts.
In just eight years since its public introduction, Falun Dafa has grown to become the most popular form of qigong ever in Chinese history. The major reason for this is that Falun Dafa distinguishes itself from other qigong practices by emphasizing not only physical cultivation, but also cultivation of one's moral character in daily life according to higher principles taught by Mr. Li Hongzhi, Falun Dafa's founder.
Falun Dafa's effectiveness in improving health and its profound principles have quickly made the practice immensely popular throughout the entire world. Since being introduced to the general public in 1992 by Mr. Li, Falun Dafa has attracted tens of millions of people in over 40 countries. Most major cities and universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Europe have English-speaking Falun Dafa practice groups.
The people who practice Falun Dafa come from every imaginable walk of life, as Falun Dafa transcends cultural, social, economic, and national boundaries. The practice has spread largely by word of mouth, as those who learn it usually find the benefits simply too good to keep to themselves.more here: http://falundafa.org/eng/overview.htm

The Staged Immolation
After the immolation incident occurred on January 23, 2001, the Chinese Government's mouthpiece, Xinhua News Agency, immediately published a report on the incident entirely blaming Falun Gong practitioners for the immolation. This was in stark contrast to the way news is usually handled in China, where lower-level officials report to their superiors and so on until the top officials allow the news to be published. Soon after the news was released, the Falun Dafa Information Center in New York published a press release on the morning of January 23 (US eastern time) condemning the Xinhua News Agency for spreading unfounded, defamatory claims about Falun Gong. It also called on the PRC regime to allow the world media and international human rights groups to investigate this case to clarify the facts.
A week later, CCTV, the Chinese Central Government's official TV station, broadcasted heartbreaking pictures of the 12-year-old Liu Siying, who was severely burned. Her mother Liu Chunling died from the self-immolation. The government is intensifying the campaign against Falun Gong by forcing every citizen to sign a form condemning Falun Gong. They are using the pictures of Liu Siying to instigate the public's hatred towards Falun Gong, causing the Chinese people to fight amongst themselves. This kind of inciting the people to fight against each other was one of the main tactics used in the Cultural Revolution in China decades ago.
On February 4, 2001, Washington Post published a stunning front-page investigative report entitled: "Human Fire Ignites Chinese Mystery -- Motive for Public Burning Intensifies Fight Over Falun Gong." The article provided several facts including the following: http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/special_col...immolation.html (http://www.clearwisdom.net/emh/special_column/self-immolation.html)

Unlike all the emperors who granted amnesty to the entire country after they were crowned, the CCP started killing the minute it gained power. Mao Zedong said in a document, “There are still many places where people are intimidated and dare not kill the reactionaries openly in a large scale [8].” In February 1951, the central CCP said that except for Zhejiang province and southern Anhui province, “other areas which are not killing enough, especially in the large and mid-sized cities, should continue to arrest and kill a large number and should not stop too soon.” Mao even recommended that “in rural areas, to kill the reactionaries, there should be over 1/1000 of the total population killed…in the cities, it should be less than 1/1000. [9]” The population of China at that time was approximately 600 million; this “royal order” from Mao would have caused at least 600,000 deaths. Nobody knows where this ratio of 1/1000 came from. Perhaps on a whim, Mao decided these 600,000 lives should be enough to lay the foundation for creating fear among the people, and thus ordered it to happen.the number is from these papers and works:

At least 30 million people are believed to have died.

[20] The Strait Jacket is a jacket-shaped torture implement. The victim's arms are twisted and tied with a rope on the back and then pulled to the front from over the head; this torture can instantly cripple one’s arms. After that, the victim is forcefully put into the Strait Jacket and hung up by the arms. The most direct consequence of this cruel torture is the fracture of the bones in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and back, causing the victim to die in unbearable pain. Several Falun Gong practitioners have died from this torture. Visit the following links for more information:

[22] Gao Gang and Rao Shushi were both members of the CCP Central Committee. After an unsuccessful bid in a power struggle, in 1954, they were accused of plotting to split the Party and were subsequently expelled from the Party.

[25] Zhang Zhixin was an intellectual who was tortured to death by the CCP during the Great Cultural Revolution for criticizing Mao’s failure in the Great Leap Forward and being outspoken in telling the truth. Prison guards stripped off her clothes many times, handcuffed her hands to her back and threw her into male prison cells to let male prisoners gang rape her until she became insane. The prison feared she would shout slogans to protest when she was being executed, so they sliced open her throat before her execution.

[27] One of the three tools (means of production, modes of production and relations of production) that Marx used to analyze social class. Relations of production refers to the relationship between the people who own productive tools and those who do not, e.g., the relationship between landlord and tiller or the relationship between capitalist and worker.

[32] Three-Family Village was the pen name of three writers in the 1960s, Deng Kuo, Wu Han and Liao Mosha. Wu was the author of a play, “Hai Rui Resigning from His Post,” which Mao considered a political satire about his relationship with General Peng Dehuai.
[33] A Chinese folk legend, the White-Haired Girl is the story of a female immortal living in a cave who had supernatural abilities to reward virtue and punish vice, support the righteous and restrain the evil. However, in the Chinese “modern” drama, opera, and ballet, she was described as a girl who was forced to flee to a cave after her father was beaten to death for refusing to marry her to an old landlord. She became white-haired for lack of nutrition. Under the pens of the CCP writers, this was transformed into one of the most well-known “modern” dramas in China to incite class hatred of landlords.
[34] Lin Biao (1907-1971), one of the senior CCP leaders, served under Mao Zedong as a member of the Politburo, as Vice Chairman (1958) and Defense Minister (1959). Lin is regarded as the architect of China’s Great Cultural Revolution. Lin was designated as Mao’s successor in 1966 but fell out of favor in 1970. Sensing his downfall, Lin reportedly became involved in a failed coup and attempted to flee to the USSR once the alleged plot was exposed. His plane crashed in Mongolia on his flight from prosecution, resulting in his death.
[35] Yu Luoke was a human rights thinker and fighter who was killed by the CCP during the Cultural Revolution. His monumental essay “On Family Background” written on January 18, 1967 was one that enjoyed the widest circulation and the most enduring influence of all the essays reflecting the non-CCP thoughts during the years of the Cultural Revolution. Lin Zhao, a Beijing University student majoring in journalism, was classified as a rightist in 1957 for her independent thinking and outspoken criticism of the communist movement. She was charged with conspiracy to overthrow the people’s democratic dictatorship and arrested in 1960. In 1962, she was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment. She was killed by the CCP on April 29, 1968 as a counter-revolutionary.

Teaching the Fa in Canada May 28 2006
http://clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2006/6/10/74333.html
Most all of the entire cosmos has been completed in Fa-rectification. I described it as a balancing scale before. Between the old and new cosmos, the new cosmos was ever gaining in weight, and the part that had gone through Fa-rectification was ever increasing, and that side was pushing down as if on a balancing scale. Now that's no longer a question, as the formation of the new cosmos is basically fully done. (Warm applause) What remains are the final elements. And when all of those things are resolved, the last stage of Fa-rectification will draw to a close. After Fa-rectification ends, the era of the new cosmos will begin. And in the end only the human world will be left to do. The expanse of this Earth and mankind's Three Realms will be surrounded and sealed off, and be separated from the new and greater cosmos. Haven't today's scientists discovered that the Milky Way is growing further and further away from the universe, and separating from it at a rapid pace? It's actually a process of departure. After Fa-rectification in the new cosmos is done, the effect that all lives in the Three Realms would have upon the new cosmos would be polluting, and that's why the Three Realms needs to be separated, sealed off, and dealt with in isolation, and that is the [stage of] Fa's rectification of the human world.
Dafa disciples are cultivating in this period, and the responsibilities they shoulder are that numerous and weighty. Now you have heard this clearly and realized it--so that is the purpose of man's existence and the cultivation state that Dafa disciples have. You should thus be clearer than ever about the format of cultivating in this world, for only this is cultivation, and only this is truly the cultivation arranged for the lives within the Three Realms. Everything that appeared in the past was for the purpose of establishing a culture for mankind, whereas this is the final starting point by which human beings are to truly re-ascend, and that is why the requirements for the cultivators who are doing this cultivation are different. The three things that Master has taught you in the Fa to do well seem simple, but [things such as] whether you are diligent and the Attainment Status you will achieve are linked to it. Dafa has been established in human society, and your form of cultivation has you conform to ordinary society to the maximum extent. Many people think it's about being lenient with and making things convenient for our cultivation, but diligent students don't see it that way. It is, rather, the path that Dafa disciples must take as they cultivate. So everything that you do, be it your balancing well your family relationships while you live among ordinary people, balancing well your relationships in society, how you perform at your workplace, how you conduct yourself in society, etc., none of these are things you can just go through the motions on. All of these are part of your cultivation format, and are serious matters.
Many students understand only that doing the exercises and studying the Fa are cultivation. Yes, with those you directly engage the Fa. But as you go about truly cultivating yourself in your day-to-day life, the society that you come into contact with is your cultivation environment. The work and family environments that you spend time in are both settings in which you are to cultivate yourselves, are part of the path you must walk, are what you must handle, and handle correctly at that. None of these should be glossed over. When you have made it to the end, [a question would be]: How did you travel the path that Master arranged for you? When all is said and done, these things have to be taken into account. And in the course of your cultivation these things have to be looked at, too. So you shouldn't neglect anything. As far as convenience goes, [in Dafa] a person can cultivate without having to enter a monastery, go to a secluded mountain, or leave the secular world. But from another perspective, all of this adds a layer of difficulty: If you are to make it through, you have to do well with things such as all of the above, and do well in every aspect of your life.
Having said that, different people understand the Fa at different levels, and there are newer students. Some people might figure, "When I take care of domestic things I'm cultivating. It's good enough if I build closer relationships with my parents and siblings." Then you have developed a new attachment and gone to an extreme. You do have to do everything well, but you can't go overboard; when you go overboard it's another attachment. Also, you need to have the right attitude toward Dafa and truly regard yourself as a cultivator. How you try to be diligent, how you regard the Fa, and how you cultivate--including the length and priority of your Fa study--you can't neglect any of these things, and they are actually more important, for this is your path, the path that you are to take. You are precisely to cultivate out of ordinary human society, and you are precisely to exist alongside the Fa-rectification while it is under way and be responsible to sentient beings. That is why you are to cultivate this way.
Falun Dafa is a great cultivation path for the current era and time, being severely persecuted in China.

It was a clash between the forces of Imperial China and those inspired by a self-proclaimed mystic of the Hakka cultural group named Hong Xiuquan, who was also a Christian convert. At least 30 million people are believed to have died.

At that time, a speech was made by the Minister of Public Security, Xie Fuzhi, in a meeting with the Public Security Bureau of Beijing regarding no intervention with the Red Guards’ actions against the “black five classes.” Such a speech was soon relayed to a Standing Committee meeting of the Daxin Public Security Bureau. After the meeting, the Daxin Public Security Bureau immediately took action and formed a plan to incite the masses in Daxin County to kill the “dark five classes.”
