We have been discussing The Republic the past few weeks in my political theory course. The other day I brought up that Plato's explination of the communial life of the Guardians, especially in relations to the sharing of the women and children, reminded me of the Borg. What really shocked me was that nobody in my class even know who/what the Borg were, most of my class is late 20s - mid late 30s and none of them knew about the Borg?

That is interesting, given that the Star Trek:The Next Generation series aired from 1988 to 1994, when this age group would've been from about 10-18 years old at the beginning of the series and 18-26 at the end, they would've the prime viewing age for such a series, one would think. Perhaps, and this is just me saying so, Star Trek really didn't have as widespread of influence as many fans of the series would like to believe.

Me, having been a fan of ST:TOS and TNG, and having grown up in a town whose name began with B-O-R-G and drove a hot rod car with a BORG-Warner transmission, no doubt recognize and remember the name of the hive-like android species more vividly than those with no connection to such a strange name.

The borg also had a pretty big influence on Voyager.

My dad loves all the Star Trek series, but there were just a few of them that I couldn't get into.

I could understand them not being fans of the show, but at least know about it...

Borg or no, Q or no, I thought Voyager sucked.
