View Full Version : Hailing all Trekkies. What do you think of other Trekkies "worse" than you?

This thread was inspired by Steve's thread about the Trekkie auction, where some pretty amazing prices were being paid for Trek merchandise.
I figured it might be an indication that Barbara Adams (http://www.drunkandretired.com/adams/) is being grossly overpaid in her day job.
It got me thinking that if I was her boss I would offer to pay her in gold-pressed latinum, credits or freakin' Moon bucks or something. I think she's possibly far enough gone to accept the offer.
So what do Trekkies think about the real full-throttle Trekkies out there?

Nothing but respect. I think Barbara Adams is great, and the only thing that kept me from overbidding anybody else at the auction was my own limited funds. If other hardcore trekkies have the means, more power to them.

I'm not a trekkie but I think "good for them" I mean really, what they hell should I care?

I don't think I qualify as a Trekkie, although I'm a fan of several of the series. (Check this: I didn't even know TOS was old when I saw it on Italian TV in the 80's. When I saw WoK in the theater I was totally perplexed at how old they were all of the sudden. :giggle: )
Anyhoo, I harbor some general resentment at people who drive auction prices through the roof, but far more for casino owners who buy Blue Period Picasso's for $140 million and then drive their elbows through them (http://www.nypost.com/seven/10092006/gossip/pagesix/cubist_killer_pagesix_.htm) than your friendly neighborhood Trekkie.

I wouldn't make fun of her, but I still think she takes it a bitwaaaaaaay too seriously.

I wouldn't have remembered, but the link refreshed my memory. She's the woman that showed up for jury duty wearing a Star Trek uniform.

I'm not a Trekkie, so I voted "I'm more full-on than Barbara Adams ever was."

So...Did she get excused from duty?

Yes. The judge in the Whitewater trial had ordered her not to wear the uniform. She did and was dismissed.

It worked, then, didn't it?

I've watched Trekkies and I'm sure she's a fine person. However, I'm a bit put-off by anyone who seems to take fantasy so far into their reality. It is just a bit of entertainment, afterall.
But, that's just personal interaction stuff. Honestly, if she's having fun and is not harming anybody, who am I to worry about what she's doing?

While her dressing up in the Trek uniform is inappropriate for serving on a jury, I don't really see a problem with people dressing up as Star Trek characters. Rabid sports fans do the same thing and yet you don't hear any one mocking them with anywhere near the viciousness Star Trek fans are mocked.

If that's the same woman I'm thinking of, she was actually dismissed not because of the Trek uniform, but because she gave a brief interview to the press about it. Judge didn't like the jurors talking to the press about anything, even if not case-related.

I enjoyed the first one when I was a kid, and watched the second one a little, but that's about it.
As far as what I think about Trekkies, I always found them to be interesting people. Some people look at them as a cult or whatever, but they're just everyday folks who happen to be pretty loyal to a tv show. There are plenty of others who are a lot more weird about what they're loyal to, you know?
Let them live long and prosper, I say. They aren't hurting anyone.

well, i dig the trek universe myself. and as to people who take it more seriously than i do.
like say someone who owns everything that star trek universe ever produced movie and show wise in dvd form, i think those people are just nutty
no seriously, in general i think good for them. i like the shows but not enough to own them all, i think wearing your trek outfit to jury duty is a little hardcore though.

I voted for the "try to keep from pissing myself" option.

I only object to them wearing their Star Trek uniforms at the Rennaissance Faire. If you're going to be a pathetic geek, at least be a properly attired pathetic geek.

It's the Femtroopers that get me.

I go to the Cons with the best of them. I've got a fair bunch of autographs, from Nimoy through Siddig. But I had to shake my head in dumbfounded astonishment when my best friend made an appearance wearing a red next-gen starfleet uniform, complete with four pips. As far as I know, he never wore the thing again, thank Christ.
