Yeah, Michael. I hope this birthday brings you the gift of satisfaction for having made the right decisions for yourself. I hope you are enjoying your new home and your new niche in a new biome. I trust you are still fussing with nesting priorities and not entirely settled, but that will come in due time.
So... What do you think of them Pennsylvania outlands? Nice, huh? This time of year, they ought to be fairly spectacular. It's mostly hardwood forest, isn't it? Are there lots of bunnies?
Happy birfday, man.
(Any pretty ladies in that town?)

Thank you kindly, one and all!
I do apologize for not being around much over the past couple of months. As you can probably imagine, things have been super busy! I'm enjoying the heck out of it, but I sure don't have much free time right now. I do have several writing projects in mind, and I promise to get to them just as soon as I can!
Today is the first day of Fall Break, which works out well, because I don't have to feel guilty if I want to skip out and enjoy some "quality time" in the woods for the next few days. Yay!
I came in this morning to check on things, and there was a bag full of fresh, ripe, right-from-the-garden tomatoes waiting for me. The department secretary had left them for me. A very sweet gesture! She insisted on singing "Happy Birthday" to me.
So, I went up to a nearby state park and enjoyed the day. I do so love the rich, diverse hardwood forests of Appalachia. I roamed through the woods (saw some wild turkeys and a porcupine, among other wild critters), watched the waterfalls, enjoyed the fall foliage, and generally had a wonderful time. If there's any sort of music more beautiful than that made by a clear mountain stream rushing over rocks, I don't know what it is.
A couple of weeks ago, I was wandering about when I noticed a familiar-looking vine. It was Vitis rotundifolia, more commonly known as "muscadine." It's a species of wild grape native to the eastern U.S.; I used to love hunting for them in the fall, and to my mind, they're much tastier than are any of the cultivated grapes you buy in the store. Alas, it's too late in the season this far north, and I could only find a couple of muscadines worth eating. Still, they brough back some very fond memories.
So, last weekend I was at a local grocery store and as I was looking through the produce, I smelled a familiar smell. I turned to find that they had a whole bin of muscadines! It turns out that there's a place not too far away from here that grows muscadines commercially and sells them as a "novelty item" to local stores. Needless to say, I bought several quarts of them. Maybe I'll try my hand at making some muscadine preserves this weekend.
Yesterday, an especially attractive woman took me out to dinner. She's smart, very pleasant-natured, graceful (she used to be a dancer), and absolutely gorgeous. She's also my department chair, and more to the point, she's married. Oh well. Still, we had a very pleasant time.
I bought some cake mix and frosting, and I think I'll make a cake tonight. Of course, one whole cake is much more than I can eat, so I'm planning to bring it in tomorrow and share it with my colleagues.
Quite a nice day!
Cheers,
Michael
