Okay, honestly, the movie experience was pretty sucky.
First of all, yeah, thanks Miramax for the fucking edited version, which only left out all the important bits! The entire thing became imbalanced because you lost the proper balance of melodrama/ sword fighting scenes which are so important in the wuxia (Chinese sword-fighting) movie genre.
Second, OH FUCK THE COMMUNISM IT BURNS! BURNS US PRECIOUS! Oh gods, I hope they make a lot of money after this blatant sell-out to the Chinese state. It seems especially metaphorical to the entire China/Taiwan situation.
Other than that, the movie was actually pretty good. Maggie Cheung was the best in my mind, and the editing was that bad, though it was fairly obvious sometimes (yeah, like, just leave out the entire green-fountain Flying Snow/Broken Sword scene whydontcha!). Some of the subtitles sucked too. I dunno- maybe they used the same translation service as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (Worst. Subtitles. Ever.). Obiously, Yo Yo Ma & co did the soundtrack, so it's suitably funky, and the whole colour-coordination thing is very cool. Though Zhang Ziyi's role seems a bit pointless, at least after the first story. Yep. I shall be waiting for the DVD to come out so I can actually see an un-fucking-edited version.
