View Full Version : Geckos
This has been brewing for a while, since the arrival of the :gecko: smilie and the continued residence of a gecko in our kitchen.
First, a random outdoor gecko (above our front door). Too snaky - not as cute.

The real McCoy (actually his name is Gecks): he has lived in our kitchen for a couple of months, close to ceiling height, zooming round - always in a different place.

I'm trying to get a video clip. Any thoughts on file sizes? Formats? I can get quicktime .MOV off my camera, but I have an instinctive mistrust of quicktime on any non-Apple machine.

My daughter has a pair of African Fat-tailed Geckos. They don't have toe pads so they can't climb. They are beautiful and are the best pets she has had. They look like this:

I am quite literally squealing even as I type. I love Gecks' big baby eyes and adorable toesies and I love the stripey, tiny-footed guys like Ex's daughter has.

Well, my house has been infested with Indonesian Albino geckos for quite some time. I know they're an introduced species, and are probably eating up the food stocks of native lizards, but they're too fucking cute for me to hate them. They make funky noises too, and eat all the cockroaches, flying ants, mozzies, redbacks, other annoying bugs etc etc. So as far as I'm concerned, they're a welcome pest.
Too bad they can't eat the cats. In fact, the cats try and climb up out screen doors and eat the geckos. I usually have to give them a whack with the broom so they leave them alone (fucking cats...).
Anyway, did you know geckos are able to defy gravity using atomic forces? Not all geckos are able to do this, but the ones that can use the hairs on their feet, but not to stick to microscopic grooves, or anything like that. They use forces called 'van der Waals Forces' to stick directly to the atoms on the wall via electronic charges, since their hairs (which are also covered with other smaller hairs) can almost be as small as (or smaller than) a wavelength of light.
Atomic Geckos. Does it get any cooler? There's so a comic/cartoon in this...

That may well be the coolest thing I've ever heard.

Aaack! I thought that you had responded bewilderingly to my horrible pun. Curses! And I would've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids! :shakefist:

Seriously, though, I don't know, either....I presume there are a bunch of geckos stacked together...dunno.

Hmmm, maybe someone tried to re-create one of the fight scenes from The Matrix: Reloaded?

And what free software should I get hold of to convert? I have not really played with movie editing or conversion until now. Have winxp and obviously windows media player :puke: .

Ah, right. Pardon me for my oversight.
For converting video under windows I use the Stoik Video Converter (http://www.stoik.com/products/morphman/mm30_svc.htm). Free but requires an email address. If you need divx codecs for it, look for the Nimo Codec Pack.
