View Full Version : What is wrong with me? I want to move again!

I have never met anyone that had this particular quirk I have, aside from my mom; I want to live in many different places/types of places and I actually spend liesure time looking at real estate. When we go on vacation, I almost always check out the real estate listings in the area and tell hubby "It would be cool to live here".
Here we are not a year in our brand new home (and I checked "Build a house" off my big life list), I love the area, and am quite content and happy, but suddenly I got a hair up my ass that I want to try living in a historic home somewhere. I have been looking at fabulous old places between work duties all day, and found a whole bunch I think I could be happy in.
It's not wanderlust, because that's more of a desire to travel and keep moving, I don't know what this is called. Can anyone relate?

Not really. I want a job where I will be happy, be able to afford a house, put down roots and stay there until I reach retirement.

:shudder: even the idea gives me the creeps.

You want to be looking forward to something?
I think I have a little of that, too. This was never supposed to be my dream house or anything. I only ever meant to live here for a few years or so, but I did mean to settle down for a few years. But within a week of closing, I was thinking about my NEXT house. And I've given up on the idea of finishing all my projects and being all settled. I just don't think I would like that.
The idea of being settled and content just seems boring.
My brother-in-law (28) goes looking at property in his leisure time with his mother. But last month was the first time they moved from the house he was born in (yes, he still lives at home).

I have not yet hung a thing on my walls. I can't seem to decide exactly what I want to do decor wise...let alone other projects.
The idea of being settled and content just seems boring.
Maybe that's it. I hate "ruts" and being bored and staying in one place too long just makes me think of being trapped or stagnant or something. I marvel at people who tell me they're going "home" for vacation or the holidays...like their parents still live in the same house they grew up in and shit. I can't even imagine.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

Oh I know I wasn't criticizing, it's just that I have found most people to be like you, and not like me. A lot of people think I am weird or flighty. I don't actually move a lot, I just think about it a lot.

When I was a teenager my mom and I went to open houses on Sundays, just for fun.

Don't worry, I wasn't offended or anything. I hate to move, probably because I've done my fair share of it and depending on this job search, I'll wind up either in Iowa, Virginia or South Carolina by Jan 1. I hope I can find a house to BUY in that short of a time frame. I'm not looking forward to it ... at. all.

I've lived in 12 places across 2 countries, 4 states and 7 cities in the last 10 years, give or take. I think it's safe to say I don't like staying in one place for too long.

Maybe, but that doesn't feel quite right either. I don't feel this way about my job, my wardrobe, my husband, my dogs...I am even downright sappily sentimental about holidays, family traditions, and anything given to me as a gift...nothing but my home and hometown. I am sure them Germans have a word for it.

When I was a kid, Mom and I went and looked at houses "just for fun" too. They were "rich people's houses"...and that's why we went.
Personally...I have done the historical house thing and enjoyed it... but (excuse the pun) it gets old, too.
Now, I want a complete house built to my specs. I don't want to have to work on any home improvement projects.
As far as boredom...if I REALLY like a place, I don't get bored with it. I guess that's WHY I like it. Maybe you just haven't found THE place, yet.
We are only renting this house, waiting until we are ready to commit to building (in a yr. or two)
When I read that you had not yet decorated...now THAT gave me chills... ...
I have been here only 3 weeks and I am almost done unpacking and, decorating...at least in the main part of the house.
For a rental, it's really a cool, big place! :)
I understand boredom, tho. I get bored with jobs. 4 yrs is about my limit, thus far...then I want to move on to bigger and better things.

I moved all the time when I was a kid. My father was the wanderer. No moss gathered on him, that's for sure. It was tough though. I never went to a school for more than one year. Each year we started at a new school.
Now I hate moving. We've been in this house for 9 years, we were at the other one for over 8 years. I love the stability, although I think I am ready for another home. Except I love where we are. Maybe we should just build a new home on the property. :)

I, a person who has had to fill out a change-of-address form about 30 times in my adult life but currently have lived 6-1/2 years in the same location, identify very much with your wanderlust, LadyShea. I said I was tired of moving and I am, but I also am tired of living here. It's time to see new places and meet new people--again.

Hah, LadyShea--I grew up on the same road where my great-grandmother was born. Talk about roots.
I usually have strong feelings of wanderlust, but for me I know that the best part of traveling is coming home. And when home is the place I have nurtured into my own little nest, I'm sure that will be ever more true.

Goldie, believe me this is unusual for me not to have decorated. But it's a brand new house. We chose the cabinets, granite, and hardwood. The walls have never been painted avacado or harvest gold, there are no holes in them. There's something daunting to me about this huge blank canvas...I am afraid of making the wrong choices.
The front bathroom is finished though. And we painted the bathtub alcove in the master bath a bright red. I have just been afraid of the great room.

Can you post pics of your great room? Maybe we could shop around online and help you find out what you want to do with it.
P.S. Have you thought about becoming a real estate broker?

Actually yes, but there are more realtors in this town than anything else, and I don't want to compete...especially since 3 of my closest friends are all brokers.
I have considered learning appraising though, not nearly as competitive as selling, and involves lots of reasearch so right up my alley.

I think you'd rock as an appraiser, Shea. I could totally see you learning everything there is to know about the real estate of the area.
Have you thought about volunteering with National Trust for Historic Preservation? That might assuage your jones. This one seems to be your local association: Alabama Preservation Alliance (http://www.alabamapreservation.org/).

Sounds like you have a case of "Decorators Block!" :doctor: :D
