I know! I tried to think of something, but my mind is pretty vacant.
Any suggestions?

By the way, you do know that is not a photograph of me, yeah?
It's one Nancy Grossman, a New York artist, as photographed by the magnificent Richard Avedon in the 1960's.
I have no idea what her art is like, or what she's all about, but I really dig this photo.
livius drusus
11-19-2004, 12:27 AM
:chuckle: Yes luna, I do know that's not a photograph of you. It's a a great image, though. It reminds me of one of the ladies from A Wrinkle in Time.
Petra

A Wrinkle in Time? Never heard of it. Is it a film?
Hey, I did find this quote of hers:
"I feel anyone who does anything great
in art and culture is out of control.
It is done by people who are possessed.
Anyone who is gong to practise on the piano
22 hours a day is crazy.
He or she has to be crazy
and it is an embarrassment
to deal with crazy people.
So there is a great attempt to formalize art
to contain it, to hold their bowels,
to be properly toilet trained.
Yet the whole exciting thing about art
has to do with being out of control.
It has to do with real things."
I like it. I'm no artist, but I think I'll change my title to "possessed" - waddaya think?

I think they're outstanding, both the quote and the derived title. :appl:
A Wrinkle in Time (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0440498058/qid=1100825152/sr=2-1/ref=pd_ka_b_2_1/102-8611658-6521763) is a great, great book. You simply must read it with/to Zoe.

That looks like a very cool book. I see it can be read online, but I shall try to get the book itself from the library, so we can read together in bed.

Cheers, bey! I like the old avatar and title too, but I felt like a change. And Richard Avedon takes nice pics. :)
Now, if only I could afford a new hair colour, too...
It sounds like A Wrinkle in Time is to you what Charlotte's Web was to me. I'll definitely read the book. I may buy it for Zoe for Xmas. That may be a very good idea. :yup:

Now I can look at you again.
Petra
11-19-2004, 06:37 AM
Really? You had it disabled?
But, but...it was a scene from Georges Melies' film, Voyage dans la Lune (http://www.filmsite.org/voya.html), made in 1902!
By the way, I like your new look, too. It's very pretty and brings out the colour in your beautiful eyes. :)

Great new av, Sharon. It matches your title absolutely perfectly.

Yeah, but the rocket in the weeping eye of the moon thing could be seen as a little disturbing. Oh geesh, that was a rocket? For some reason I thought it was a bottle of booze.
lunachick, I think your new avatar projects a take-no-prisoners crotchetiness that I don't think you've got. I know I aspire to great hagdom and probably achieved it sometime in my 20s, but unless you lose your wonderful childlike sense of wonder and joy, I think you are fooling yourself that you are like your avatar. Sorry, dude. :sadcheer: It's an awesome photo, though, and I love it as an avatar. We can all dare to dream toward our greatest aspirations!
SharonDee! I love your new avatar; mysterious and enticing!

Thanks for the props re my new avatar, y'all. I have a thing about presenting my online persona as eyes; it's a habit from my Delphi and About.com days. Maybe it's because I prefer reading to writing. *shrug*

And Luna, I recognized the image from that old silent film but liv had it right about the eye thing. The poor man in the moon... with that rocket in his eye... well, I'm just child enough to be disturbed by that. And you see how I am about eyes.
(I even had my eyes checked today; so far I still don't need bifocals yet. Whew!)

Oh my! avatar changes abound! (not me, though. I LOVE mine as is!!)
Luna,
I think the new av is cute & interesting; a good look. If I hadn't seen the old one, I'd say, spot on. BUT, having seen the old one, I thought that one was A-No.-1 top drawer and absolutely hilarious! I'll kinda miss it. (don't pay any mind to those ninnies that think it's disturbing. I remember seeing that movie scene from a "survey of film" or some such and always thought it really outstanding.)
Sharon,
I like the mysterious you.
Goliath,
Now THAT's a Philistine Giant, isn't it?! Good one!
Great new av's, guys!!

I then changed it to the Richard Avedon photograph of Nancy Grossman, which is the right hand side of this pic:

I think the bird is too small and, well, uninteresting for you, luna. It's not even that nice a picture, really, particularly if you compare it against lovely flower shots like you see in freemonkey's collection. I'm going to have vote a big nay on the new one. Sorry. :sorry:
Anonymous, you totally need an av. And a custom title too. :yup:
Petra
11-22-2004, 12:19 PM
I know. I'm just trying on new clothes. Some fit, some don't.
The Bird of Paradise pic was found in just a few seconds - no great search for the perfect pic or anything. Although, I do like it's 'beakiness' - it's almost like a caricature of an in-bred, aristocratic Tory politician as one might find in the pages of Punch, or in the introduction to BBC's tv Yes, Minister, or something.
I'm feeling quite fickle these days, so no doubt it will change again soon.

You must be stopped, no matter the cost.

Seriously, though, excellent avatar. I believe it was from Episode 12 (The Ultimate Doom, Part 2).
The Autobots just retreated from battle after being driven back by Soundwave's audio disrupter waves (which also interrupted with the signal from Dr. Aarkyvil's (sp?) hypno-chips). Starscream says "What is your excuse, Megatron?! You let the enemy get away! You--"
Megatron picks Starscream up by his neck with both arms and says "Cross me again, and I'll reduce you to titanium fragments!"
Starscream says, now more worried "But..we had the Autobots disoriented! We could have eliminated them!"
Megatron replies with "We'll do that at our leisure, when our more important work is done." as he throws starscream back onto the ground.
The camera switches to the angle that is seen in Eldar's avatar as Megatron points down to Starscream and says "You have had the only warning I intend to give."
....and yes, that was all from memory. :nerd:

[ :nerd: ] Actually, both Starscream and Thundercracker were Decepticons. However, they did have their differences, which were brought out most in (I believe...) Episode 9, Sky of Fire. [/ :nerd: ]

http://www.aotearoa.co.nz/saker/gallery.htm
It's an arcrylic painting of parent and child. It's stylised, using traditional Maori spiral design (known as the koru - an integral part of maori art and craft), representing new life, new beginnings, growth, movement, etc. The design is taken from nature, and is the curl of a new frond on the ponga trees and ferns.
The black olives that liv can see is probably a kite (kee-teh), which is native flax woven into a bag or basket.
The colours remind me of the sea, paua shells, and native NZ bush.
The new title, Aroha, is the Maori word for love.

:)Well, isn't that special!
Funny how close that is to the Hawaiian "aloha" used for greeting and farewell. For all I know it means "get the fuck off my island, whitey".
Petra
11-23-2004, 01:24 AM
LOL!
Yep, the People of the Pacific have very similar languages, but Maori is most close to Hawai'ian. Maori also look more Hawai'ian than other Polynesian groups; which leads us to believe that Hawai'iki, the island they originated from before journeying to Aotearoa (NZ, to you foreigners), must have been one of the islands of Hawai'i.
The main differences is with letters like S and L, which Maori do not have, but other Islanders do.
Incidentally, Aotearoa means "Land of the Long White Cloud", but some prefer the alternative meaning: Land of the Wrong White Crowd. :D
