View Full Version : Debit Card Fraud

As if I wasn't poor enough, someone ganked my debit card number and spent about $380, despite the fact that I only had about $70 in there. So now my account is showing as overdrawn until they can investigate, etc. which will take a minimum of 5-7 days. :brooding:

That's the pits. How did that happen? I hope you get your money back!

I guess I dropped a receipt that had my number on it, or an employee of some restaurant swiped it.

It was just the number, too. I still have the card. Apparently this stupid lasertag place let someone spend $300 there with just the number and exp. date. I called the place, and they were all "oh they must've registered a party or something, that's the only way we would take a number over the phone." But they weren't even interested in checking their records to see if someone ordered a party for that amount yesterday.

That really sucks, vm. I hope it gets sorted out ASAP. And I hpe they catch the mf.

:wtfsign: Your receipts don't show the full account number, do they?

I once left both the receipt and the card in the machine. My husband's card, no less. I realized what I'd done the moment I got home, turned right around and went back. The card was gone, and the receipt was laying on the floor. We never did get the card back, but no one got into the account.

That happened to hubby and I once on our joint account.

We got a phone call from the bank before we even noticed anything wrong.

I've never had anything like that happen, but I do worry about it from time to time.

I'm sure they'll be more cooperative with the bank's fraud investigators, and if not them it will be the police. I had the Pizza Hut delivery man use my card number to purchase a bunch of shit off the internet (and I mean shit (http://www.pyramidcollection.com/cservice.asp)). He had the full card number and expiry date because he took an impression when he delivered the pizza. And Pizza Hut was more than happy to give up his information to the investigators. Woo!

geez, what assholes. I need to stay out of this thread or I'll be go into full scale worry mode. :worry:

I hope everything turns out okay, vm. :optimist:

yeah, it certainly sucks vm, i had a similar problem a couple/few of years ago.

it sucked because i couldnt stop the direct deposit on my check before it hit my severely overdrawn account.

i was poor for a few weeks, but eventually it all worked out.

dont think they ever caught the guy.

Aw, I'm sorry, vm. I've been there. Who's your bank? SunTrust has always treated me like gold.

Man, that's got to be a helpless feeling. The worst thing that's ever happened to me was someone swiped some cds out of my car. At work, no less.

i hope it doesn't take a bajillion years to get it straightened out.

I had mine cloned a couple of years ago in Camden. It was maxed out and the bank said they were trying to buy electonics up and down Oxford street all day which is what alerted the fraud department to it ... When they were busy trying to call me to check if it was me, I was ignoring the phone because it was the bank.

From what the bank tells me when I bought a pair of shoes and the card was swiped through the machine (I'll add here it was declined) they actually copied all the data from the card ... I don't understand quite how that works, the magnetic strip I suppose, then they made a duplicate of my card.

This was before chip and pin so all they had to do was hand over their duplicate card and sign the till receipt.

Sorry to hear that, VM. :sadno:

Hope they'll catch the creep and hang him by his nose hairs.

Man...that sucks. Something like that almost happened to me yesterday. As I was getting ready for work this morning I got a call from my bank telling me that I left my ATM card in the machine yesterday. I'm used to the new ATM's where you just swipe your card, but this one was in the lobby of the main branch and it was an older one that kept your card during the transaction.

Dammit. Hope it gets sorted out soon. In my limited experience banks usually do sort these things out - but as you say it could take a bit of time.
