...for this thread. I tried to come up with something objective, and creative, but all I ended up with was....nothing. LOL.
Anyway, I had the tv on yesterday, for about 1/2 an hour, and I watched one of those info-mercials. it was an advertisment to buy episodes of The Carol Burnett Show.
I have always thought Carol Burnett's variety show was ten times funnier than anything Lucille Ball ever did.
Contrary to popular belief, not everyone loved Lucy. I never thought she was funny. I thought she was grating and whiny.
And, Carol Burnett's supporting cast was also way, WAY funnier than Lucy's.
I mean c'mon, Fred, Ethyl and Ricky don't hold a candle to Tim, Harvey and Vivki. Am I right?
Anyway, out of sheer boredom, I thought I'd fly this up the flag pole (poll?), and see if anyone saluted.
it was either this, or post a picture of my medicine cabinet for discussion.

I voted for Lucy, even though I agree that she was often grating and annoying as hell.

I think they both were funny in their own right, so I voted other. Who doesn't laugh at the classic episodes where Lucy and Ethyl stomp grapes to make wine, or work in a food factory assembly line. :foocl: I remember the first time I saw Carol Burnett. It was a special on tv where she played a princess--called, "Once Upon a Pea".

I voted for Carol Burnett, if only because Lucille Ball once admitted she had no talent for comedy without a script.
Also, Ms. Burnett is of my generation, while watching I Love Lucy reruns in the 70's always made me hate it for its treatment of women as silly children.

I voted other, as in gender, because I can't seem to think of any funny female comedians.

Hard to evaluate Burnett, because she tended to surround herself with very funny sketch comedians. But, yeah, too often with Ball the female-infantilizing themes kill the funny for me.
Is there a whisper of red in Samantha Bee's hair?

Lucille Ball's hair was actually dyed, not that I object to that.
For the curious, Wikipedia has a list of redheads. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_redheads)

You must remember the times, Ball is a product of her generation, that's how women were thought of back then.

Yeah, I was able to appreciate her work when I got older. But I was a big feminist-wannabe in my teens so the show really grated then.
Later on as a mom, I mellowed a bit and was able to laugh with my young daughter, who had fallen in love with the show on Nickelodeon.

It comes down to Vitameatavegamin vs. Scarlett O'Hara for me. It's a tough one.
Can we all agree that the answer is not Kathy Griffin?

AGREED!! That Kathy Griffin is not funny. At all. She always has that 'Look at me, I'm being funny' thing going, and that is completely unfunny.

Bozo sure SEEMED funny when I was eight. It looks really retarded now. I think Lily Tomlin is funnier than either Carol or Lucy.
