Pity me or congratulate me. I just got hired as a waitress at the Red Lobster. While I'm really embarassed about that, I am SO proud to be a working member of society again!

Go me! :happydance: Go me!! :happydance:

Why would you be embarrassed?

Tanda

Oh, I wasn't going to tell you this, but it was so funny I changed my mind.

Before I went in for my interview we were at Walmart shopping for Thanksgiving stuffs. I was wearing blue jeans, which I planned on changing once we got home. But the store was so full and it took so long to get out of there that I didn't have much time to get ready when we got back. I started to change into dress pants but changed my mind because I was afraid I was going to be late. So, I kept the jeans on and left.

The interview went great. I felt like I really clicked with the management. They hired me, gave me a return date, and I went home.

I decided to change into some shorts because I was hot from running around. But when I went to remove my jeans, I realized that the zipper was down. It had been like that since I left for my interview.

I couldn't move for about a minute. Did anyone see it? Do I remember anyone looking at me funny? Was I sitting in a position that would compromise my...um...privacy?

No matter the case, I'm going back on Monday. This time I'll remember to zip up.

I have an aunt who refers to the restaurant as "Dead Lobster", which always cracks me up for no really good reason!

I have a friend who was a waiter for some time getting through high school and college. A restaurant (I think it was a Bennigans), based on his experiences, offered to hire him as a manager for $35,000 (this was in 1990, when $35,000 was a little bit more than it is today). He declined the offer and eventually became an airport manager for Memphis Intergalactic Airport. He makes more money, albeit it took him another few years to get into the airport management career.

I don't know what your politics are, but the company that owns Red Lobster (Darden) is hard-core conservative. They sponsor hate-mongers like Sean Hannity, they give money to dishonest organizations like the International Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources (it's not what it sounds like), and they only give money to Republican politicians. I don't patronize any of their restaurants (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, China Coast, Bahama Breeze, Smoky Joes Barbeque and Grill, or Seasons 52) because of those reasons.

They were just buttering their bread as they thought would best benefit their business. Maybe they'll realize the error of their ways now that Dems are in control. Many companies, the one I work for included, are re-examining their political donation and lobbying strategy since the election. We'll see, I guess.

I know that and realize that she's not going to work as a lobbyist, but I wanted her to know who she's working for. I don't know what city she lives in, but I would imagine that if they have a Red Lobster then they probably have a dozen other restaurants where she could get hired. Well as long as we're all weighing in, I thought JackDog's comments were very topical and perfectly polite, and Tanda's response was perfectly graceful. It didn't get ugly until after their exchange was finished, as far as I can tell. If it were me, I would be interested in knowing the record of the company I'm going to work for. Jack, while I appreciate your cause, I'm simply not in the position to be picky. On a related note, I was waiting for the manager so that I could fill out the remaining paperwork and I noticed a particular lobster in the tank who was twitching. I asked a waiter walking by if they were aware that they were about to cook a lobster with tourette's. What kind of sicko would cook a handicapped lobster? Bastards. :mutter:

Disclaimer: If the word "handicapped" offends, I apologize. Just tryin' to get a razz out of the locals.

I'm normally a very good tipper but the worst tip I ever gave was at Red Lobster many years ago. I went with a friend and his wife and the waitress was beyond surly. She was rude from the start and never checked on us the whole time. Rude when she took our order, rude when she brought our food, and rude when she slapped the check on the table. If the place had been busy at the time, I might have been more understanding. Instead of my normal 20%, my friend persuaded me that, instead of nothing, it is normally more symbolic to give a single penny. We did that and I still feel bad about it. I haven't yet figured out if I should feel bad, though.

Good luck to you and I'm sure you'll only be surly to a customer if they deserve it. Give 'em hell!

Tanda
11-30-2006, 12:51 AM
I have had experiences like that before. I always tipped anyway because I worried that the reason why she was doing such a crappy job was because she just found out that her husband had been sleeping with her sister, or her electricity had been turned off and she didn't have the money to have it turned back on. You just never know. Everybody has at least one bad day at work.

BTW, that Hello Kitty is rockin'!

I've never had service so bad I even considered not tipping, or leaving an insulting tip. I've had indifferent service, maybe even slightly truculent service on one or two occasions, but if I were on my feet all day dealing with noise, hot food, abrasive people, I'd hardly be sunshine in a basket. I'm amazed wait staff ever manage to be courteous, efficient and helpful as they are 99% of the time.

I've had service that bad, but I tipped anyway. I'm sure they didn't know my measely 10-15% in those cases was far less than my usual 20-25%. I really showed them, by golly!

quiet bear, I've had a policy for about the last year or so where my smallest tip is $5 for a full service meal, no matter what the amount of the bill. Which, as you say, can be a significant percentage for some breakfasts or a simple lunch at a diner.

pescifish
11-30-2006, 09:56 PM
On the topic of bad service... Not that this was bad service exactly, but was really really weird:

I once had a waitress argue with me about what I was ordering, repeatedly telling me the portions were large and that there would be too much food. I was treating a friend of mine to dinner and both of us are consumate doggie-baggers. I knew my friend wouldn't order as much as she normally would since I was treating, so I placed a couple of appetizer orders to go with our meals, so we could sample the fare and take the rest home like we usually do.

A couple of my orders never showed up. When I asked the waitress she explained that she didn't put them in: she felt we had ordered too much food! My friend and I were rather nonplussed about that, retailiating simply by giggling uncontrollably as we ordered 4 different desserts (not something we normally would do) all in to-go boxes.

I really don't know what was up that waitress' ass, but seemed like a very stupid policy for a person getting tipped based on a percentage of the total bill.

Pesci, that's the weirdest dining story I've ever heard. I would've consulted the management.

My first shift was last night and the waitress who was to train me arrived late and with a bad attitude, hardly saying a word to me. I just tried to make the best of it and after a while, when she was in a better mood, she told me that she has a toddler, goes to school and has a paper due, & doesn't have money for rent next month. What amazed me was that, even though she had all that going on, she still managed to be courteous and kind to the patrons and really earned the good tips that she received. I was really proud that I got to train with her.

I hope when my bad day comes, I'll be able to pull if off like she did.

The worse dining experience was when my Dad came to see me (it was the first time that I'd seen him in 10 years and I also got to meet my new little brother, the son of his new wife). Anyway, Joe and I decided to take them to a nice mexican restaurant that we frequented. The food took forever to arrive and we found out during the course of the meal that they were short of cook staff and the waitress was helping to prepare our meal. She brought out chicken fingers for my little brother (5) and in the middle of his meal we realized that the inside of the chicken was uncooked. His meal was free, but he got really sick in the middle of the night. We never went back.

It's so nice of you to ask, Liv! :cheerful:

My first week went great! Everything that I was afraid would happen didn't. It's working out well for everyone. Money's good, hours and convenient, managers are gracious, and the employees just rock!

There was only one thing I really screwed up on--There were two ladies who had finished their cheddar bay biscuits and salads and were asking if their entree was ready. I go back to the kitchen and their meals still aren't up. So, I go to the computer only to find that I had forgotten to submit their order to the kitchen.

I run to the manager who lets out an "oh, shit" when I tell him what I did. He literally runs to the kitchen while I'm telling him what they ordered and 8 minutes later their food is in front of them. Manager and customers were totally cool about it and somehow I not only managed not to get fired, but I also got a tip from them, lol.

Lesson learned. :professor:

So, a really neat thing has happened--

I was working one night last week when I had a gentleman stop me in the middle of his meal to ask if I had ever worked for a five-star restaurant. I said that I hadn't and he remarked that I was very professional and he was impressed with me. I thanked him of course and when he left, he put his business card with the tip. On top of it he had written "If you ever want or need to change jobs..." He's the comptroller for a tuxedo/formal shop in town.

So, I called him the next morning and I have an interview next week. It's a day job (what I've been looking for the whole time) and I'm really excited. The only bad thing would be if he wants to pay me significantly less than what I'm already earning.

Just wanted to share. :cheerful:

Oh wow, that's great, Tanda! If he's talking 5 star service, there's no way you'll get paid less. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you. :crossed:

Thanks, Liv! I'm hoping it works out. We've had to stop taking karate since I got a night job and the boys are still a bit peeved. :sadnana:

I run to the manager who lets out an "oh, shit" when I tell him what I did. He literally runs to the kitchen while I'm telling him what they ordered and 8 minutes later their food is in front of them. Manager and customers were totally cool about it and somehow I not only managed not to get fired, but I also got a tip from them, lol.
Hey, honesty is the best policy. It was lucky not to have :asshat: customers, but even better to have let the manager know right away. You've got the benefit of being new and expected to make some mistakes. I know I'd be a little upset if my order got forgotten, but having the server come over and admit the mistake would go a long way towards clearing things up. If everything else were fine and we weren't in a hurry, the tip would be penalized by an honest person who'd made an honest mistake.

I'm glad to hear you're in a good environment with good people. Let's hope that place keeps attracting good workers (the restaurant business is notorious for having a high turnover of workers). Be nice to the cooks and other staff there, and things should go smoothly for you. Don't forget the dishwashers, either. They've got a thankless, messy job, but are vital to keeping things running and making sure folks don't get sick or disgusted and not want to come back.

Thanks, Shake. I appreciate that.

It's a terrific place to work with really great, helpful people. High turnover? Yeah kinda, and I'm about to add to the statistic. I do hate the part of the job where you tell the employer that you will be leaving. That always hurts me. I don't like to disappoint people (not that I'm irreplaceable or anything).

I've made a point of knowing everyone's names and I speak to everyone there: the busboys, cooks, preps, biscuit baker, dishwashers...even the hostesses who sometimes double seat me. Everyone likes to know that they are a vital cog in the machine and I enjoy letting them know that I appreciate their work. Warms my heart right up. :fire2:

You must have experience in restaurants also. I hope you felt appreciated there.

Well? It's about a million miutes past 3 now.

Maybe Tanda got the job, and seeing as how it's 5 stars, she can't associate with the hoi poloi any longer.

I'll be dusting off my Three Stooges tie and taking my one suit to the cleaners, just in case.

Hello ffriends!!

They offered me the job!! Hurray!!

But now I'm stuck in a little quandry. They offered me $8 hr. to start at 40 hours a week, and later commission on sales and rentals. Without the commission that's less than what I'm making at the Red Lobster. :sadcheer: But I would know how much money to expect every week, the hours are great, the people are cool, and the work sounds fun. :1thumbup:

So, my question is: should I ask them for a higher payrate? It's the only thing keeping me from saying yes. :whatthe: I'd really appreciate your input.

Yay! I knew you'd impress them. :victory:

As far as the money is concerned, I really don't know what your next step should be. I've only negotiated payrate over temp jobs, and even that was just because I didn't want the work so they threw money at me to get me to do it.

Is the gap between what they're offering and what you make at RL substantial?

Hmmm...I just did some more calculating. I suppose it wouldn't be much of a difference. And it might be worth hanging around just to get started on commission, even though it doesn't seem significant to me (1% on rentals and 5% on sales). Oh, and they have this marketing program where I can make an extra paycheck. I forgot to tell Joe about that!

How does that sound? :justice:

It sounds good to me, Tanda. Considering how much you wanted a day shift and that you have other opportunities in this organization to make more money, I think it may be worth a pay cut.

Whichever decision you make, you should feel great about yourself right now. After the drudgery of the pre-RL job search, now finally you've gotten some damn appreciation up in here. :chestram:

Well, they obviously like you, or they wouldn't have offered you the job, right?

I don't know exactly how it works, but if it were me, I'd ask how long before I would see a pay increase. Do these places usually lowball you?

Also, is the pay something you can get by with, for now?

I'm really glad they offered you the job.

Tanda
01-17-2007, 02:44 AM
Thanks, QB. I think the pay would be okay for now. At least until commission starts up.

I'm going to take the night and really think about it. I know that it doesn't seem like a big deal, but I don't like giving my two weeks notice. It makes me feel irresponsible to my current employer.

Thanks for the support guys. I'm going to go get some sleep.

Take care friends!!

Working, probably.

BTW, my eldest daughter landed a job at Red Lobster. At least it's some income. If she makes $9000 this year it will be $7500 more than she made last year.
