Happy Mariska Hargitay Back on SVU Day, everyone! I swear on a stack of TV Guides, that was one of my first thoughts when I woke up this morning. I even double checked my recorder to be certain it will be captured.

I'm behind watching episodes from the last month or so, but I've liked the character that they paired with Stabler in the meantime. I thought they managed to get good character development and show some complexity in just a few episodes.

Uthgar the Brazen was an "alias" identity I used a number of years ago on the Yahoo! message boards. I had a persona built around him and everything. Some over-zealous soul of the more popular religion decided to come and stir the crap on the Other board in the religion section (before they re-did everything). Uthgar The Brazen was a demon in orbit around the Earth whose job was, obviously, temptation. But unlike the evangelical concept of a demonic entity, his role was more akin to what Satan's was early on in the Hebrew scriptures: not a malevolent "anti-god," but a trickster figure whose goal was the exposure of folly in the thinking of mortal and divine alike. Uthgar would goad the proselytisers into a complete religious frenzy, and then congratulate them on their progress. Every self-righteous declaration was gasoline on the infernal fires of his glee, because the idea behind his existence was that Hell was a tool not to punish dissenters, but to cull idiots out of the spiritual gene pool. Souls who could never quite let go of the fear that was the basis of their "faith" became, literally, Uthgar's food. All with You-Know-Who's knowledge and approval.

Another fellow (whose handle I have sadly forgotten) grok'd what I was doing and took on the role of an "angelic" counterpart, more encouraging of learning what life has to teach in a positive fashion. Uthgar would just as soon as not have his "students" fail, since embracing or refusing enlightenment was their decision, and he dined well in any event. With apologies to everyone on every message board before, then and after, that was probably the most fun I've ever had on the internet. "Angel" and I had a vast web of metaphysical speculation going, made up of references to mystics, occultists and the occasional cartoon character. It was somewhat like The Screwtape Letters on acid, and from a non-Christian, spiritualist perspective.

We confused the ever-living crap out of the missionary trolls, and I think I actually managed to badly frighten one of them. Unfortunately, my college years were spent in ultra-fundy, Bible-thumping foam-at-the-mouth mode, so I knew all the buzz words and theology. It really bugged this one kid, who couldn't take me by surprise and wasn't able to completely delude himself into thinking I just didn't understand. I understood very well.

The name "Uthgar the Brazen" itself just formed in my head at the time. I was looking for something that conveyed an unrelenting nature. I think it captured that well.

Now, go brush your teeth and say your prayers before you go to bed. Be careful of that last bit, though.
