Thank you! Especially to liv for gathering such a fine collection of smileys.
Not doing much to celebrate, just getting ready for our trip to NYC for Thanksgiving. It is weird having a birthday so close to Thanksgiving. Sometimes, it's nice because the whole family is together on your birthday, but then everyone forgets because they are so wrapped up in the turkey-holiday.
Still, it bothered me when I was 12...not anymore...not really anyway....
:thankyou:

My son's is the 27th, and a year or two ago when Turkey Day fell on his birthday, we made it a birthday that just happened to have a turkey dinner. (He'll be 4 this year.)

I'm guessing Pretty In Pink resonated with you, then. ;) I was always glad my birthday had no holiday conflicts, particularly with Christmas, as it seemed to me far more likely that you'd get shafted on the presents front than that you'd get double the goodies.
Are you going to have a cake or anything like that today, trip prep notwithstanding?

(I don't get the Pretty in Pink reference, I've never seen the complete movie in one sitting.)
We don't have anything planned. I am not really that big of a birthday person. I like the gifts, I like the well-wishes...but beyond that I just like having a nice dinner out.
My wife and Becca gave me a nice gift. A wedding band. I lost mine this summer during camping. I really like it and all...and I hate to sound ungrateful...I mean, I recognize the significance of replacing my lost wedding band..but...
I have this idea that birthday gifts are supposed the kind you would get for a kid. No matter what the age of the person, I try to give a gift that would elicit a happy childlike response. Perhaps its because I've retained so many of my childhood likes and hobbies, I don't know.
Still, this should not be construed as being ungrateful. I really do like the ring. It's so shiny. And I've been missing it.
But, man, what I wouldn't give for a B:TAS DVD Vol 1 and 2 set. :batman:

I wonder if I convince the dinner host this year to put icing and candles on the turkey.

Everyone forgets her 16th birthday in the chaos of her sister's wedding. She gets the guy in the end, though, so it's all good.

Well, you know, it's hard to put yourself in someone else's shoes and pick the present they would want rather than the present you think they should have, particularly when you have a totally different approach to gift-giving. I call it asparagus server (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=12357&postcount=30) syndrome.

So, I'm gonna get some guy in the end?
Sweet.

Hee. I remember reading that thread.
I guess I should clarify, I think people should get toys or toy-related things for their birthday. Fun stuff. Stuff that serves no useful purpose. Stuff that even if you stopped playing with it the day after your birthday, you still smile when you see it gathering dust in some neglected corner of the room because it simply makes you feel like a kid again.
Perhaps a bit too much to ask for a birthday gift, but I got high standards. How else do you think I found such a lovely wife?

Yes but see, if you apply your fun stuff principle across the board, you're going to bump straight into asparagus server syndrome. Some people want practical, non-toy gifts like, oh, say, a new badass vacuum cleaner; they get the same joy from that as you do from the things that make you feel like a kid again.
I think people should get things that bring them pleasure. For you that's toys or toy-related things. For my mom it's silver geegaws. For me it's books, movies and new appliances (and jewelry, but I'm ridiculously picky about that so it's best purchased after I have seen and approved).

Happy Birthday, Eldar.

...and Eldar, don't forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he'd ever wished for.
He lived happily ever after.

Errr, no ... you're thinking of Sixteen Candles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088128/).
Trust the guy who had the huge crush on Molly Ringwald in the mid 80s!

Um, er, B:TAS DVD Vol 1 and 2 set what it is?
and I know just what you mean about toys. I LOVE toys. A couple of years ago in my office I gave all of us on our staff "saucer shooters" that shoot those nerf rings out of little ray guns. I gave the boss one, too, but we were all armed and shot him before he could unwrap his!! and then there was the Christmas where I had a bunch of toys wrapped up, not for anyone specifically, and tried to get my family to play "steal the present" -- the first person unwraps one. If the next person likes it, they can "steal" it and the first person has to pick another present. Or they can choose not to steal, but to take what they get, sight unseen, among the still-wrapped items. Then the third person can "steal" either the second or first toy, or choose the next wrapped toy. After two "steals" the toy is "safe" and can't be stolen again. But my stupid family not only didn't get into the spirit of stealing the toys, they didn't even play with the ones they got. It was completely wasted on them.
Oh, and, :birthday: Eldar!!! Do something wild and crazy!!!

B:TAS be Batman: The Animated Series (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00023E894/qid=1101330183/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/104-1493385-2407147?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846).
The best superhero cartoon ever.
And we've done the "stealing" thing for an office Christmas party. Was a blast.
