It's safe for us mortals to play Jeopardy now (http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/12/01/tv.jennings.ap/index.html)

Earlier this year, my local paper broke the bad news that his streak would end with his winnings in the $2.5M range. This sparked some local outcry since the show was then on summer hiatus. :fuming:

I caught the official story yesterday on Yahoo! (and also on iWon) even before the show had aired. Why the fuck did they have to ruin the surprise? Now yes, I knew it was coming soon, but even so, I'd rather have been surprised.

It looked like business as usual for Jennings, heading into double Jeopardy with a commanding lead. But he blew both daily doubles for several thousand dollars and quickly had his lead shrunken to a mere $800! But he forged on and was able to establish a $4,400 lead by the end of the show. He only had the one challenger for final Jeopardy (as the 3rd contestant wound up in the red), and he bet exactly as he should have, but he missed the question and Ms. Zerg bet exactly as she should had Ken bet nothing.

After taxes and the 10% to his church, he should wind up with about a million bucks. As he told Alex last night, it's not enough to quit his job, but he said he might not put in as many hours.

Well played, Ken!

Just when I thought there was a person so smart they knew everything, the image was dashed upon the rocks of reality, nobody knows everything, no matter how smart they are.

I think it sucks that spoiler articles were published before the airing. Having said that, the guy kind of annoys me. I'm glad to see his run end.

Wouldn't it be funny if there was a big scandal, where producers gave the guy the answers beforehand because all the publicity would generate increased market share? Maybe they could make a movie about it, with Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro starring. And, maybe Robert Redford could direct.

Maybe there are only so many Q and A questions, but reading the story brought me to something which was the reason I stopped liking Jeopardy a long time ago: The Final Jeopardy answer/question that tripped Ken up was "whose employees work only 4 mos a year during IRS season" or some such. The question was "What is H&R Block?" See, to me, this is a just plain advertising wolf dressed up in game-show sheep's clothing. Some of the categories, such as business or industry or a lot of times even science or history have to do with products. Jeopardy had become a product placement pimp a few years ago, so I lost interest in it.[/derail] oops. you are now returned to your regularly scheduled broadcast, er, thread. Sorry!

I haven't watched TV regularly in years, so I never saw this guy on Jeopardy. I did, however, see him on Leno or Letterman the other night. It wasn't very interesting.

What I found interesting is that the woman who defeated him lost the very next night!

Btw, maddog, they didn't say, "during IRS season," they said, "seasonal white-collar workers." I was still trying to think of what kind of white collar job was seasonal when my wife blurted out the answer.

If you haven't seen it, you ought to, it's pretty well made, it is based on the true story of Charles Van Doren who as a game show contestant who seemed to be infallible.
