I finally broke down and bought a new digital camera. It's an Olympus SP-510 UZ. SLR-like, 7.1 Megapixels, 10x Optical Zoom. I saw it on sale for $275 at Circuit City and that looked like a good deal, but I came home and found it on the 'net for $237 w/ free shipping*. :yes!: It should arrive on or around Friday.
Soon, I will have those deer right where I want them.
*From BuyDig.com, which I found by doing a Froogle (www.froogle.com) price search.

Sounds like you got a good deal.
I just 'touched' my new toy a couple of days ago. Last part I need for a new rifle: Basically an American/South African FAL. Saw it at the shop, petted it, filled out the forms, and the store-owner put it away. Currently undergoing the 11-day-waiting-period California requires before I take it home. Waiting period doesn't make much sense to me: If I really am in a fit of rage to kill someone, why wouldn't I use one of the firearms I already own instead of go to buy a new one for the job?

Hmm. I just did a quick search on Froogle, and it looks like you can get a really good digital SLR for less than $700 nowadays. I'm gonna have to start looking at going to digital. (Heck, a digital SLR would probably pay for itself within a couple of years, considering the money I'll save on film and processing fees.)
Cheers,
Michael

I finally caught up with the 21st century and got a digital camera for Christmas. It's nowhere near as nice as vm's and it's just got a 3x optical zoom, but it's 7.1 Megapixels so it should be good for me for at least a couple of years. I'm pretty happy with it except for the fact that it's bigger than I'd like it to be (it takes 2 AA batteries), and it takes 1.8 seconds between shots to clear the buffer. That doesn't sound like much time, but when you're taking action shots you can miss what you're trying to shoot while waiting for the camera to be ready.

Oh man, I just found a medium-format digital camera that has sensors twice the size of those in a 35 mm SLR, and that will take 16+ megapixel pictures that can be blown up to cover a small wall without loss of detail.
Now, if only I had $9,000 dollars or so to spare ...
Cheers,
Michael

Sooooo... viscousmemories. What's going on with you?
First with the store boughten haircuts, then a new camera and an MP3 player. Are you rich now, or did you just get the shopaholism or something?

Hi VM,
Congrats on your new toy. Glad you got something for Christmas. Oops, you forgot my present.
I had a $250.00 Olympia but it drove me crazy since I wouldn't sit down and learn how to use it. Lulu, of course had a TV show on it on my TV the first time she touched it. I gave it to her, but she lost it. Lol.
I will ask Vicky to come over and take photos of me so I can post em on eHarmony. Someone named Steve is interested. Will wonders never cease.
Just got back from the dentist and I do not have to have more work done for a while. Oh my gosh, I am so happy.
Love you much,
Jacquie aka unowho

Kewl...I'm enjoying my Lumix (a Panasonic product) that I acquired during the Solstice, even though I really haven't had the opportunity to use the 12X optical zoom. I'm hoping that I can get some decent "wrens at the feeder" pix.
If you haven't already, you might want to get a polarizing filter for your lens. It's extra protection, and cuts the glare in your pix.
Good price! Congrats.

Good suggestion! And, if possible, make sure it's a circular polarizer.
Not only will it protect the expensive lens and cut down glare, but it's essential for producing pictures of water and pictures in which the sky is included -- and you want the sky to look blue instead of white. Greens (like leaves) look much better if your camera has a polarizing lens, too.
Cheers,
Michael
But remember to take it off in low-light scenes... :)

Hi VM,
Congrats on your new toy. Glad you got something for Christmas.
Thanks! I actually got a couple things from people other than myself, too.
Oops, you forgot my present.
Ha! I didn't get where I am today by blowing money on presents for my Mom!

That wacky chick.

Congratulations! I need to get to a dentist myself one of these days. Any chance you could pull some strings with God to get me hired permanently at my new job?
Love you much, Jacquie aka unowho

Right, George Costanza. It's a Seinfeld reference.
That's not a bad camera, you know you can check cameras out on Flickr?
Yours is ranked at 47 of 108 Olympus Cameras and it's usage on Flickr is climbing, they've also got the price range at $297.47 to $299.99 so you got a proper bargain.
I should get paid for advertising www.Flickr.com :giggle:

Actually I did check Flickr - lisarea mentioned that in another thread. I didn't realize they had rankings and all, I just searched on the model and looked at some pics people had taken with the thing.

You might want to take a look at this Making the Transition from Film to Digital (http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/pdfs/phscs2ip_filmtodig.pdf) (1.5MB 12 page PDF) about switching from film to digital.
Money wise digital is great. I easily paid for my older Canon digital rebel in processing fees. My Mom just recently took it on a trip and took what would have been about $500 in film and development fees (well it wouldn't have been as she wouldn't have carried what amounted to about 50 rolls of 24).

The new camera came today! :excited:
I think my first add-on will be a tripod, but the polarizing filter is on my list. Thanks for the tips!

So, how's the camera? I've been looking at this one too. Seems like a good deal.
PCMag (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,2086650,00.asp) has a few reservations, though. I'm not sure what those mean exactly.

I like the camera a lot but I've hardly used it. About a week ago I bought the biggest, fastest XD memory card I could find (2GB, Type-H), so I should be getting a lot more use out of it coming soon.

There's a herd of deer in my backyard right this minute, but they're just a bit too deep in the foliage to get a clear shot at 'em.
...with the camera, wiseacres. :glare:

My new SLR.
http://www.clubi.ie/exalted/images/army/Ireland/FAL1.JPG
Well, the British called it the SLR, at any rate. The disturbing bit is that the optics alone cost the same as the Powershot S3IS I recently bought. (Which I have to say, is proving to be quite a good camera)
