All but the newest of newbies will have heard me rant about my poor quality net connection, so I won't go into that here. A few things have kept me from visiting the forum much, but this is so annoying it's funny ... some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working. I'm typing this using the windows on-screen keyboard ... as a challenge.
Fuller story: for the past few weeks I've been very busy with an extra project at work and have had less free time and energy to visit. That's life as usual. Then, on Tuesday 30th, I rebooted my computer, only it didn't. (Power) lights were on but no one was at home. Motherboard failure. It had to go to HP for diagnosis and quote (it's 2 months out of warranty :( ) and will cost R3000 to fix (~US$500). The diagnosis alone took a week. I'm getting a dell next time with 3-yr next-day on-site warranty.
I didn't lose any data even though my last backups were 2 weeks before, because the hard drive could be read in another machine. A colleague kindly lent me an old machine of his, which is slow but fine ... except now.
The keys affected are 0, backspace, home, w,e,u,o,p, and b, which make typing a serious pain. A reboot didn't help, but I have some hope that leaving it off overnight may help. He did warn me the keyboard was dodgy.
:deepsigh:
