View Full Version : it gets worse

All but the newest of newbies will have heard me rant about my poor quality net connection, so I won't go into that here. A few things have kept me from visiting the forum much, but this is so annoying it's funny ... some of the keys on my keyboard have stopped working. I'm typing this using the windows on-screen keyboard ... as a challenge.

Fuller story: for the past few weeks I've been very busy with an extra project at work and have had less free time and energy to visit. That's life as usual. Then, on Tuesday 30th, I rebooted my computer, only it didn't. (Power) lights were on but no one was at home. Motherboard failure. It had to go to HP for diagnosis and quote (it's 2 months out of warranty :( ) and will cost R3000 to fix (~US$500). The diagnosis alone took a week. I'm getting a dell next time with 3-yr next-day on-site warranty.

I didn't lose any data even though my last backups were 2 weeks before, because the hard drive could be read in another machine. A colleague kindly lent me an old machine of his, which is slow but fine ... except now.

The keys affected are 0, backspace, home, w,e,u,o,p, and b, which make typing a serious pain. A reboot didn't help, but I have some hope that leaving it off overnight may help. He did warn me the keyboard was dodgy.

:deepsigh:

That reeks, Joe. How long did it take you to type that post using the Windows keyboard? Oh, and when are you going to get high speed like a normal person?

Sorry to hear about your issues, Joe, but glad to see you here. You didn't miss anything in my vacation thread, 'cause I never gave the updates to liv so it suffered a lonely death. I have since been to Southern California for a quick visit but I haven't written anything about that either. :yup:

You can buy a new keyboard for what? $10 ?

I always have a few spare ones hanging around. For that matter, I've got two or three spare computers. :P

Joe call me. Lets do that hook-up we've been planning and I'll give you a working keyboard. I've got two or three spare so I'll take one to work tomorrow and hopefully we can get together.

All: keyboard is working fine now (any errors in this post are normal typos :P ). A night's rest did the trick. Or was it the two aspirins I ground up over it?

Thanks farren for the offer. I'll take you up on the beer but not the keyboard! Ceptimus, I will take your suggestion of have a spare computer lying about. Actually carrying this notebook with a separate keyboard would be easier than carrying the other notebook I have on my desk ... since its display backlight has died and I would need to lug the monitor with it!

Luna: :yup: :D

Liv: it didn't take too long because I am used to hunt-and-peck on my PDA on-screen keyboard. But it is such a pleasure typing at normal speed again. :user: Faster connection: hmm. Subject for a later post.

lady cop: I won't shoot this notebook as it's a much-appreciated loan from a colleague. But maybe I could go and shoot HP's design, manufacturing and support staff and premises? Got enough rounds for that?

One thing I've learned about prevarication is that it's never too late to do something that friends will appreciate. (Otoh official things you don't get reminded of never need to be done!) Write about both trips today!
