I am a cookie novice -- this is only the second December wherein I have attempted to make cookies. Last year's efforts were disastrous. (Baked goods and I are not friends.)
This year I am doing a little better. These cardamom butter squares (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/231217) were featured in this month's Gourmet, and they are fabulous. I tend to like spicy, medieval-y, fruity flavors at Christmas, and these fit the bill admirably. Although I adore cardamom I'd never cooked with it before, and was alarmed to discover that it smells exactly like mothballs in its raw state, but it sure makes a helluva cookie. It is very much worth icing these as directed, even if you'll never find another use for the instant espresso. All in all the only flaw of this recipe is that it produces a very delicate dough, so you can't roll it out and cut it into cute shapes.
Who else is making specifically Christmassy cookies? Bring on the recipes!
