View Full Version : Last Call for Secret Santas

Okay kids, the time is nigh. I'm sending out the Secret Santa assignments tomorrow evening. We have a lovely little group already, but if anyone else feels the urge to unload some cra... erm, share their precious attic wonders with a fellow FFer, just send me or vm your name and a shipping addy by 7:00 pm tomorrow, December 15th.
Just to reiterate for anyone who might not have followed the Deck the Halls (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1172) thread, the idea here is you send in your name and addy to the admins. We match people up and PM each participant a single person's info. You scour that person's posts for ideas and then ship him or her a white elephant you already have in the home.
Once everyone gets their presies, we start a present-opening thread to ooh and aah and just generally ham it up to make me feel good about having had the idea in the first place.
What's not to love? :xmasday:

geeeez, thanks for ruining the surprise Warren.
I have a stupid question, I get that its secret... but for how long? Forever?
What is the price range? And what sort of gift is expected to be given?
livius drusus
12-15-2004, 11:55 AM
It should be a secret until the opening, I would think, freemonkey. We can either put a note in the package or not say anything until the present opening thread.
Beth, there is no price range as it is not a bought present but rather something you already have in the home. The only expectation I have is that the gift be something you genuinely think they'll like based on things they've posted.
Gosh, something lying around the house,...that is much trickier. I mean, I have gurlie stuff

Some won't be very secret simply based on the postmark....but let's try to make this fun.
Beth, if you get a guy, surely you have something of hubby's he no longer uses or wants. I have so much shit lying around here I am sure I can find SOMETHING for anyone.

So far we have more women than men, Beth, so the odds are good that you wouldn't have to upend hubby's tool box. :)

Is that ratio reflective of the general population in this forum or just the SS participants (hmm...maybe I shouldn't abbreviate "Secret Santa"...can be vaguely disturbing).
I wonder if that's why I feel so comfortable here, I've always had more female friends than male friends.

Hmmm... I'm not really sure, actually. It's very interesting question, though. Mebbe I'll do a rough gender survey of active posters sometime and see what comes of it.

Good pick-up line. :giggle:
We are supposed to send the annonomously with no return addy? That might be a problem. If I try to send a parcel with no return addy, the post offices in my area refuse to post my packages when i go to have them weighed and shipped because of Homeland Security and the anthrax scare. They insist I fill out the return info. Has anyone else encountered this?

I drop-ship posters for one of my clients, whose Florida address gets put in the return address space, as opposed to mine. Even on international packages. Only once was I questioned about it, and it was in a non-threatening manner.

How many people live in Las Vegas? They'll know it's from me even with just a post mark and no return addy. And I have never been questioned about a return address...hmmm.
Strange. They refuse to ship it unless I write my address in the left, upper corner. But I will use your idea, Liv.

A thought occurs to me: we should all include a note explaining where we got the idea. That way even the socks and undies will make sense. Besides, getting a little handwritten note from someone you've only ever seen in Verdana 11 pt will be like a whole other present. :)
Hmmm...I did not realize the suggestion of the old socks and undies would be perceived as a tease. Sorry.

I'm afraid there's a crimp in the Secret Santa plans. Wildernesse has unfortunately had a death in the family and isn't even sure when she'll return home, let alone be online again. :(
I could rearrange the pairings, but that doesn't seem right to me. How about we just delay the present exchange until after the new year? It's late anyway, so it doesn't seem to me like it would be too much trouble to add a couple of weeks to the deadline.
What do y'all think?

You know, you can do a gift exchange with an odd number of participants, you just wouldn't have pairs.
Like this:
#1 gives gift to #2
#2 gives gift to #3
#3 gives gift to #4
#4 gives gift to #5
#5 gives gift to #1
BTW, if it's not too late, count me in. I'll figure out how to explain the 18" used dildo to my wife. "It's a dog toy, honest. See, the dog likes it."

Of course, I hadn't looked at the thread, so my thing just went out yesterday, with a non-handwritten note (I don't even have handwriting anymore, I just send everything to the laser in the basement) explaining it. But conveniently, I independently decided that an explanation would be useful!
Anyway, later is fine by me. I'm in no hurry.

I actually got mine sent off yesterday. I had to change my initial idea because it was too heavy and made the postage to expensive for me. :(
I wrote a handwritten card, though - but I was appalled by how awful my handwriting had become. I think I need to practice it again, like a kid at school learning to write for the first time.
The Post Office told me it usually takes about 10-14 working days to get to the US, but it may take longer due to all the extra mail in transit at this time.
So, if your present is really late, don't fret - it's a-comin', k.

Not a secret Santa thing but ... our company sent each of the employees a phone card with 60 minutes of time on it as a holiday gift/thank you. The guy I work most closely with put out an email to our group and some of the secretaries about collecting them and sending them to Walter Reed Medical Center (http://www.wramc.amedd.army.mil/) for the troops to use. He sent out about 18 yesterday, and has a few more today. Sort of a low turnout, but it was something nice to do. Almost all of my LD calls nowadays are via cell phone, so I sure didn't need it. We are a government contractor and the military is a big customer of ours, so it's nice to give a little something back.

I am absolutely stumped as to what to get my Secret Santa. If we can't figure out anything specific from the posts our Receiver (oooh, that sounds so...I dunno) has made, can we just buy something ridiculous?
I did a search for my Receiver to see if his/her posts could give me any clues, and the hits returned include "Conversation after sex," "Your favorite porn site," "Chocolate" and "Gender identity" - eh!

OK, package sent 01/03/05 in the p.m., not the a.m., via priority mail (domestic US). It should arrive on time. I had to delegate even the mailing, b/c I relapsed again (though I think I'm feeling better this p.m.).
My note pretty much reveals who I am, too, and I'm pretty sure who sent mine (b/c of the address of origin). MY secret Santa mailed early and it got here in plenty of time! I've had a hard time waiting to open it, but couldn't even feel tempted as long as (1) I was sick, and (2) hadn't mailed mine yet. So NOW I'm beginning to feel justified :innocent: in getting antsy!

I'm going home now. My mailbox better have a surprise in it...waitaminute!
Today's the 5th, not the 6th. That means I won't get my gift until tomorrow. That means I won't know until after I go home tomorrow. That means that some of you will know what you got and post about it here tomorrow, while I have to wait ALL DAY LONG before I can get my gift.
Unless I get it tonight. Please please please please please please please!
Which will it be?
:mail: OR :nomail:
LOL! Eldar, it is the 6th already, silly goose. :giggle:
Now that I've been teased via PM, I'm getting all excited, too. I thought I would miss out - being so far away an' all. But, I have been told to be home tomorrow to "sign" for my Xmas surprise. :woohoo:

So, at what time are we doing this? The one I sent won't be there until tomorrow afternoon. And it would be fun to make Eldar wait and see how much stress that causes. Could we do it kinda late? Please? Could we? Huh? Could we? ...Huh?
(Liv, as a Christmas present, I want you to know that I deleted a typo just for you.)

I think we should do it on the weekend and maybe do it in chat :). I also can't guarantee the item I sent will be delivered tomorrow. I sent it just yesterday.

A question, if we decide to do it in chat..... Its been awhile and I've uninstalled mIRC. Can I use any old chat program - like, can I download & use the Mozilla one?

All you have to do is click Member Options - Chat, freemonkey. It runs off the forum database using Flash.
I'm okay with it being late tomorrow or the weekend. Of course we have to wait until everyone receives their precious treasures or it just won't be right. (Sorry eldar honey, but you know it has to be this way.)
I don't mind chatting about it, but my preference would be for a thread as the main exchange. Posts sound better to me than chat in this context, for some purely visceral reason.

Actually, I haven't received my gift yet and can only participate during the daytime on a weekday, as I generally don't go online during the evenings or weekends, so I'd hate to hold everyone up on my account. I'll let you know when I get mine, but if it its better for everyone to open during the evening or weekend, don't wait on my account.

Went to ge the mail last night and there was a gi-normous box tied to the mailbox. It was raining yesterday, so the mailman wrapped the box inside of two plastic shopping bags and tied the bags to my mailbox. So, not only is it here, but it's dry, too.

As the most curious one here (yeah, yeah...shaddup), I vote for waiting for next week.
I have the gift with me in the office, but need to leave now for the weekend. So, I won't even be here until Monday. Or at least, my gift won't be with me during the weekend.
But, again, don't wait for me. If enough of you want to open them now (NOW NOW NOW NOW), then that's fine with me.
I've finally attained inner peace and am comfortable with this decision:

For the record, I don't have anything in my mailbox - but that doesn't mean anything. If the package is bigger than my box (tee hee) it goes to the apartment complex office, which isn't open until Monday. But please, everyone open their presents! I'm dying to see what everyone got!
