View Full Version : There is no fight here

I'm feeling melancholy, so I thought I'd start a new thread to not fight about anything in.

Feel free to fight anyway though, if you want.

I got three canker sores in my mouth last week, for the first time since I was a kid. A big one on my bottom lip, another big one on my top lip, and a tiny one on the tip of my tongue.

So basically my mouth was enflamed all week. When the burning finally died down I got a sore throat, and after two days of sore throat I finally got another tiny canker sore on the tip of my tongue and I have bad heartburn, so now I'm free from the boredom of painlessness again.

Ho ho ho.

Goddammit I'll fight if I want to!! You're not the boss of me!

:D

I hope you feel better. Canker sores really suck.

Thanks, Nex. :)

Yeah, they really do suck. And next time I'm gonna buy some kind of anesthetic medicine instead of just riding them out with Advil. If there is a next time...

tiny canker sore on the tip of my tongueOuch. I had one of those last week, too.

My problem this week? Can't stop eating the Chex Mix and the chocolate. :eat: :eat: :eat:

Chex Mix and chocolate... :homer:

I think I'll make some chocolate chip cookies. I burned the batch last night (well okay, they were dark brown not black) but I ate them anyway. What was I gonna do? It was the last of the cookie dough!

Damn that's crazy cold. I grew up in Michigan but after the last two years in SoCal and now here I don't even want to think about those temperatures. I haven't really figured out the weather in Texas yet (it's in the 60's Farenheit lately), but Warren said icestorms happen here.

It was 19 degrees F when I walked outside this morning. It's been a while since my hair froze; used to happen all the time in college. Of course, one expects it in the Berkshires. One is bitter about it in Georgia.

After our -15°F weekend, it's supposed to briefly climb up to 30°F today, before crashing back down into the negative teens...which is good. We want Santa chilled and sluggish, the better to fall into the traps we're setting.

Hey, isn't this thread supposed to be about fighting?

Dammit. It's been as balmy as...as a witch's tit here. Like 60s. I almost died.

Then, I hear there's a big "arctic" front headed our way, and go to look, and they're predicting like 30s, and not even with any snow, either. Fuckers.

On the plus side, last night this big wind started, and I woke up twice last night thinking the window was going to blow in and fall on my head. It's still going, and I'll bet the trashcans are gone, and I saw some crap was blown up on the porch. So, it's kind of less boring, anyway.

But still.

Know what would be even less boring than some wind blowing some trash on the front porch?

It's cold. Not as cold as some of you, but too cold for what should be summer.

Blustery winds, rain, hail, and occassional sunshine. Very occassional sunshine. I'm really pissed about it. I wanna go to the beach. But it's too cold. Grrr.

That canker sores (a variety of "mouth ulcer") are necessarily a manifestation of herpes simplex is a common misconception. In fact there are many possible explanations, including no explanation at all.

Canker sores are a common form of mouth ulcer. They occur in women more often than men. They may occur at any age, but usually first appear between the ages of 10 and 40.

Canker sores usually appear on the inner surface of the cheeks and lips, tongue, soft palate, and the base of the gums.

They usually begin with a tingling or burning sensation, followed by a red spot or bump that ulcerates. Pain decreases in 7 to 10 days, with complete healing in 1 to 3 weeks. Particularly large ulcers (greater than 1 cm in diameter) often take longer to heal (2 to 4 weeks). Occasionally, a severe occurrence may be accompanied by nonspecific symptoms of illness, such as fever or malaise. Canker sores often come back again in the future.

There may be an inherited tendency to develop canker sores, as they often run in families. There may also be an immune system link. Ulcers may develop in response to a mouth injury such as dental procedures or aggressive tooth cleaning.

Canker sores may also occur at the site of a bite when the tongue or cheek is bitten. They can be triggered by emotional stress, dietary deficiencies (especially iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12), menstrual periods, hormonal changes, food allergies, and similar situations. They occur most commonly with viral infections. They may occur with no identifiable cause.

Yeah.... cold sores are a form of herpes virus, canker sores are just sores.

I've gotten them before, the doctor I saw at the time asked what I was eating.... when I told him 'deli chinese food and top ramen' he basically said 'yup. That'll do it.'

(The salts.... possibly including MSG. The tissues in the mouth irritate pretty easily.)

This one is true! I used to give myself canker sores in church, biting my cheek as I watched the auditorium clock's second hand, trying to see how long I could hold the flesh between my teeth.

I grew to enjoy the pain this caused, eventually taking the habit with me to public school.

Here's (http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/health/fever-blister/fever-canker.html) a site that differentiates the two.

Sheesh. I contented myself with counting things. Ceiling tiles, organ pipes... it never occurred to me to hurt myself, although in retrospect it might've been an improvement.

What's the book of Revelation about?

I wondered what these weird canker sore thingies were, too, but now I know - they're mouth ulcers. I haven't had one for awhile, but Zoe has one currently. It's her first ever. I think I must've given her the gene. Poor kid. She has yet to suffer from cold sores on her lip, but I tend to get them in early Autumn. Dunno why, but that's when they show for me. Horrible, vile, disgusting things. Icky.

In the Book of Revelation, the author "John" has all these trippy visions about the end of the world. It has fire, brimstone and swarms of locusts, the Four Horsemen and the Devil. Actually it is full of all the great things that The Religious Reich wants to ban books for.

And I saw, and behold, a pale horse, and its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him; and they were given power over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth, the full moon became like blood,and the stars of the sky fell to the earth as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale;

And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key of the shaft of the bottomless pit;he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft. Then from the smoke came locusts on the earth, and they were given power like the power of scorpions of the earth; they were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any green growth or any tree, but only those of mankind who have not the seal of God upon their foreheads;they were allowed to torture them for five months, but not to kill them, and their torture was like the torture of a scorpion, when it stings a man.And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death will fly from them. In appearance the locusts were like horses arrayed for battle; on their heads were what looked like crowns of gold; their faces were like human faces, their hair like women's hair, and their teeth like lions' teeth; they had scales like iron breastplates, and the noise of their wings was like the noise of many chariots with horses rushing into battle. They have tails like scorpions, and stings, and their power of hurting men for five months lies in their tails. They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abad'don, and in Greek he is called Apol'lyon.

At this risk of getting philosophical here, I don't know how any reasonable person could read a quote like this:
...the stars of the sky fell to the earth...
and still believe everything in the Bible is literal. Isn't it obvious that the notion of stars falling to Earth is based on an erroneous understanding of astronomy?

I neglected to quote the bit about the star Wormwood, which falls into the seas and poisons them. Of course you don't need to look past Genesis to find examples of bad astronomy, biology etc...

I just love that description of the locusts. Human faces with hair and the teeth of lions, metal scales, scorpion tales. Why even bother to call them locusts?

I get a cold sore once or twice a year. Just pack it full of salt a few times and let it burn and it usually starts going away right after, I don't know about cankers though. I would gargle and rinse my mouth out with warm salt water a few times a day though, if I had them, but I'm not certain I know what cankers are.
