My remote won't work anymore. Do I need to buy a new teevee?

If your television is hooked up with DVD player and home theater system, then now you can justify getting a universal remote like the Logitech Harmony 880 (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/detailsharmony/US/EN,CRID=2084,CONTENTID=9933)

Yeah, I have one of those 5-in-1 remotes laying around. It don't work neither.

I'm guessing the light sensitive bit in the teevee crapped out on me.

I'm not even sure if you actually need a remote for the TV. With cable and satellite boxes, the ony thing I ever need to do is either power on or power off the television. It's always set to Ch. 3 and the volume is pretty much stable (and can be controlled through the set-top box, too).

If you got the TV plugged into the back of the set-top box for power, then you can power on or off via the set-top box remote, right?

Yeah, I don't have a cable box, it's just a direct line for basic service. But I have the cable routed through the VCR, so I should be able to control the teevee channels with the VCR remote. Thanks for the epiphany! I was all set to move the couch six inches from the teevee.

This is good justification for a new teevee, preferably one that takes up most of a wall.

Trust me, in different circumstances, I'd be on my way to Best Buy as we speak.

This monstrosity (http://brookstone.com/store/product.asp?product_code=538744&search_type=search&search_words=remote&prodtemp=t1&cm_re=Result*R4C1*T) is only 25 bucks online. I saw it the other day at a Brookstone shop. As a bonus, you couldn't lose this bad boy if you tried.

Just do the right thing for the economy and hire an illegal immigrant to change the channels for you.

A long stick (fishing pole or similar) and a steady hand will allow you to 'remotely' operate the TV from the couch.

lolz

It'll probably be tuned to ESPN/NBC for most of the weekend (http://www.usopen.com/) anyway, so I'll start worrying about the subtleties on Monday. In the meantime I can change the channels through the VCR, which solves my immediate problem.

This might be a silly question, but have you tried changing the battery in the remote?

I had a really great remote once, where the 'previous channel' button could hold up to 4 channels instead of just two. I don't know what ever happened to it, though.

On a somewhat related note, I still have the first tv I ever bought with my first credit card, in 1986. A Panasonic. It still works great, and I still have the original remote, too. (plus a little duct tape and a rubber band holding it together).

It was funny,

No, they make these things called batteries which go into the remote and allow it to work. :P
