A feature I've wanted for a long, long time is now a reality. When you use Google Maps for driving directions, you can now drag the suggested route along a different path and instantly compare the distance/time of alternate routes.

That sounds pretty cool.
It's a bitch going just about anywhere to the south or southwest of Boone as there aren't any primary roads that travel the length of the mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway does but it isn't going to save time on long trips. I've tried playing around with Mapquest but it's not that great trying to plan a route out piecemeal with each leg of the trip in a separate window/tab.

Yah, and it works excellently. It's also great for figuring out the distance of a bicycling route, so long as the route is mostly on the roads.

I've been waiting for that for a long time...it's been frustrating trying to figure out how to go a particular route instead of the one maps.google or mapquest give you. I've been doing it piece-wise like Ymir. I wish I had known about this last night when I was trying to nagivate a route from DC to Western MD via backroads on my mobile.
