View Full Version : What on earth did I do wrong? (windows question)

Sooo I had to reformat my windows drive and reinstall XP. So I stupidly installed the Japanese language pack and now my error messages and other random things* are in Japanese. Double checked my settings in Windows CP...yep, it's all set to English (US). Same with Firefox.

No problem, says I. I'll just uninstall the language packs in Windows. Well, now where there was once Japanese, there's question marks. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox (which is the worst offender), but with no luck. It happens on Windows error messages, too. I've been trying to crash something and still have the ability to print screen to show what i mean, but I can't do it.

Any ideas on what I can do to make this stop? It's rendered some of my extensions useless.

What on earth did you do wrong? You said it yourself - you installed the Japanese language fonts!

I installed Chinese fonts on a previous windows installation and was never able to remove them.

You might *gulp* want to try a repair installation of windows.

Yeah, or just reformat and reinstall.

Thanks, guys. I was afraid of that.

Dammit.

I just reinstalled day before yesterday.

That's the best time! Not a lot of data or secondary applications to muss about with.

In fact, reformat and reinstall several times until you have got it perfect.:peace2:

Well, that's an idea too. Glare at your computer until the Japanese fonts commit ritual suicide. Not sure it would have occurred to me, though.

From the screenshot I take it they already did! :slice:

But you still have the problem, right? And by providing much jollity, we may have stopped anyone who has some useful answers from paying attention to the thread.

Yes, I do. I do have a way to solve it, though, as soon as I get a better wireless card...I'll use Windows for design, and either SuSE or Kubuntu for web surfage/FTP. Till then I'll just ignore it and pretend that it doesn't exist.

I refuse to reinstall unless I start getting kernel errors again. :hmph:

But yous guys are still teh funneh.

If reinstalling Windows is too much bother, you'll have to reinstall the Japanese language support and learn Japanese. Simple!

It took me two days to get my programs back how I had them. Then I did the stupid thing.

Why didn't I think of that??? It's so simple! It's not like Japanese is hard to learn or anything, those lil pictures should be a snap to work out.

:laptop::whup: This is how you get Windows perfect. Sorry Curses, it's reformat time. Or *snort* Windows repair utility *chortle*.

Just in case, have Phoenix Deleted File Recovery standing by.

ETA: I really should check the dates on these old threads. *yawn* Saturday night, most of the kids are in bed, and I'm reading old FF threads.

You think you have font (http://burningsmell.org/alienmap2.png) problems (http://burningsmell.org/images/allcaps.png)... Every time I install an art font or something my system decides it's the best thing ever and uses it wherever it can. :sadcheer:

Which, actually, is pretty cool sometimes. But people making designer special-effects fonts usually don't include umlats and em-dashes.

whoa, Gentoo does that to you? That's nuts!

A few bugfixes later and it stopped happening, but it was interesting while it lasted. :D

I installed the Japanese language pack on my computer and it has never caused any problems.
