I bought Jek an iPod for the holiday. She is showing no interest in it whatsoever <sigh> - so I decided to break it out and use it myself. Well, no one ever told me that I needed to have WINDOWS XP or WINDOWS 2000 in order to run the damn thing!

Is there any program out there - any hack, anything - that would allow me to upload music onto this fucking piece of metal running a Windows 98 Plus!?!

Oooh, I have no idea. I seem to recall that an iPod should look like Any Old Hard Drive to a machine that supports USB or FireWire (?) drives, so you may be able to just copy files... I have no idea! Never tried to use one.

oops - in wrong forum...oh well, it kinda has something to do with music.

But more with computers, I think. I'll send it along so the nerds can help you out. (No, I am not excluding myself.) ;)

This isn't just a computer problem. There's clearly something wrong with Jek!

USB is probably the issue. What kind of Windows98 do you have? 98SE? Earlier versions had little or no USB support.

Do you have a USB port on your computer (quite likely but doesn't mean anything in itself)? - And if so, have you successfully used any other USB devices?

USB is great, when it works. Just now I had my camera connected and a USB flash drive. Currently I have a 120GB external disk and a wireless mouse connected. Each of these set up with no effort at all. But I also have a couple of aged laptops running Win95 (which my daughter's been using) and it's frustrating that they can't run USB.

Joe And if you see a program floating around that claims to add USB support to Win95, don't use it. The txt file Microsoft helpfully left in it says it probably won't work but won't misconfigure your system, they lie. It WILL bork your system, very very badly, so badly that reformatting is the only obvious way out.

Yes I did... (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17078&postcount=15)

I hope that software Corwin listed can make it all work for you.

BREE,

I'm new here so Hi!@

I don't know your PC's configuration. Your running Window 98 Plus. That is OK, but is your PC capable ie: space, speed, RAM. ?? I'm assuming you have a USB PORT..!! I posted a little about XPLAY, it came out in June04. From what I hear it work well. :yup:

HERE IS A LINK TO A PROGRAM CALLED XPLAY. It's a addon for IPOD, that works on all windows platforms. It cost $29.95 you can download a free trial.

http://www.mediafour.com/products/xplay/

The ultimate iPod add-on for Windows.

Since the beginning XPlay has been the leader in bringing the Apple iPod to Windows users. No bulky interface, no fluff, nothing to get in the way of your and your music.

There is no easier way to manage music on your iPod. Whether you are putting music on your iPod or copying music off, XPlay is the way to do it.

I don't know your PC's configuration. Your running Window 98 Plus. That is OK, but is your PC capable ie: space, speed, RAM. ?? Except for high-end games or things like photo/video editing, software these days tends to vastly overstate it's minimum requirements. Unless your machine's a real lemon and out of drive space, minimum requirements for an external music player of all things shouldn't be an issue.
