i have had some comp issues. once upon a time i was getting seriously infected and i got a buddy to reformat my harddrive and install windows xp. i had me at the time.
so my comp was working fine for almost a year after that.
i didnt use it for awhile got a new case and put everything in it.
but one of my harddrives had crapped out.
no big deal it was a small 40 gig one anyway.
but now windows insists that my copy of windows isnt legitimate.
what should i do?
oh, and it definitely is not legitimate.

So it's illegitimate eh? That's a bastard.
Some options are:
Reinstall Windows (either a legitimate copy - the OEM version is reasonably priced, or a fresh cracked copy downloaded off BitTorrent or similar - though you'll need a working PC to do that, of course)
Install Linux (though you'll need to be interested in doing that, be something of a :geek: and it's not much use for playing Windows games)
I don't know how you'd repair your existing broken copy, but hopefully someone here will have some useful advice. :crossed:

Another option is to just go through the validation process, which at one point will ask you if you'd like to buy a license to make it legit, then buy the license.

im morally opposed to paying for windows if i can help it.
and it still works, it just keeps harping about my illegitimacy.

im worried that it might stop working at some point but as near as i can tell it still works it just tells microsoft that im a pirating bastard.
wiki said that its got something like a 90percent false positive rate.
there is the option of changing to another haxx0red key from a keygen, but I didn't bother and just told windows to stop complaining about it. Works fine.

This (http://blog.mypapit.net/2006/05/windows-genuine-advantage-tattoo-cracks.html) might be of some help, though I haven't had to try it...yet.
I think it went like this (I certainly did something with the registry, can't remember what):
1. Lauch Windows Task Manager.
2. End wgatray.exe process in Task Manager.
3. Restart Windows XP in Safe Mode.
4. Delete WgaTray.exe from c: \Windows\System32.
5. Delete WgaTray.exe from c: \Windows\System32\dllcache.
6. Lauch RegEdit.
7. Browse to the following location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify
8. Delete the folder ‘WgaLogon’ and all its contents
9. Reboot Windows XP.

The only thing that's left is the little icon in the system tray, but it doesn't do anything.
