Last weekend I found a perfectly good dining room table and chairs sitting on the curb to be picked up as garbage. So I took them and now they're in the breakfast nook.

But this is pretty good too I guess.

And probably doesn't have termites.

Fuckin' freegans. :nojustno: Get a job. And a haircut. And a shower. Not necessarily in that order.

Woo! Dumpster diving at its finest!

I found a suitcase full of books in front of a dumpster.

I wanted one of those handheld shower thingies for Kiddo's tub (he hates sitting in the bath, but is afraid of the normal high shower head so we have had him standing with the tub faucet running and pouring cups of water over him). Anyway I was all set to go buy one, when BIL comes home from dumpster diving with a brand new one, still in the plastic inside the sealed box! And not one of the cheapie plastic ones I had planned on, all chromed out including the flexible tube part. It was sitting on a curb with the garbage.

I found this woodcarving in a skip a few years ago.

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/ceptimus/freethought/pics/carving/1.jpg

I put it up over the door of my study - it's about the same width as a standard door.

I took a few more snaps of it, but I'll put those in a different thread (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=408643) - I don't want to hijack this one.

Like nine or ten days ago, I left a perfectly good dining room table and chairs sitting on the curb while I was moving into my new place. I came back shortly thereafter and some asshole stole them.

I haven't found much from dumpster diving apart from some sturdy slide carousel boxes. The carousels got dumped and the boxes saved for papers and photographs.

However, the roadside has yielded up a fair amount of blueboard (useful for craft and modeling projects) and other things, the best being a 100lb concrete gargoyle that now graces the steps in the backyard.

The suitcase full of books was evidently the results of someone not liking political science much. One book was Hitler: Closeup. There were several on socialism, including Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle. It also had a textbook called Politics in Developing Countries and a history of language of the Apache Indians. It was quite the haul.

Apartment dumpsters around the first of the month are a veritable treasure trove, though.

Trash is treasure! Any good archaeology student will tell you that!

The only trash I find around here is pizza boxes. And the occasional mattress which someone has cleverly maneuvered into the dumpster. BOR-ing.

Of course, this post means that my Secret Santa is going to send me a bag of garbage this year. (hint, hint.) Bwhaha.

The Hallmark Gold Crown ornaments hit the shelves the 2nd weekend in July. Been that way as long as I've been alive.

It's the most wonderful time of the year

I bet y'all raided the top shelves of all the closets in your house every time your parents went out from August to December. :no:I found my Daisy BB gun that way. What a disappointing Xmas morning that was, finding out that other than socks and underwear, that BB gun was my only Xmas gift, and I had known about it for about 3 months.

I was a campus security guard when I was in college. At the end of each school year, we and the housecleaning staff would go through the dorm rooms to see what kind of stuff people had left behind. Evidently, a lot of people figured it was just too much trouble to haul their stuff away.

We'd pick up perfectly functional television sets, mini refrigerators, microwave ovens ...

Cheers,

Michael

I think I've already posted it in about 3 or 4 threads, but yesterday I found an epson printer/scanner/copier/card-reader in the trash. I've gotten the printing, scanning, and copying features to work so far, but the card-reader is proving to be a bit of a challenge.

I found a pretty nice counter top in the dumpster a few months back. With a bit of work, it's now enhancing my workshop.

My husband got a book the other day.

My best find was a bunch of calculators from a hotel remodel. My dad resold them for $20 each.

He's joking that the manufacturer is effectively giving the hardware away as their money is made on the refill cartridges.

Ensign Steve

Whoops, duh, yeah I missed the joke. Should have been obvious, too, as I'm shopping for a new laptop and they all come with "free" printers.

I've got a couple computer printers at home that just as well be in the trash because I can't afford ink cartridges for them right now.

I found a pristine 6-pack of Budweiser on someone's front lawn early on a Saturday morning when I was 5. This was the 70's, so it wasn't any of this "lite" crap or froo-froo "lime" beer, either.

Funny, I got considerably less hammered on four beers at age 5 than I do now with just two. Of course, the stuff I periodically imbibe now probably has 500% more alcohol content.

Dingfod

I drank all the ink. It wasn't good.

Uthgar the Child Drunk: I could've used that beer when I was around 5 years old and let the 9 year old neighbor boy talk me into taking a bite of an ornamental pepper (probably habanero).

Way back in the 90s I found a perfectly serviceable 5 disc CD changer. At first I was all :cheer:. It stopped working a week later. :sadcheer:

Other than that, my adventures as a Recycling Technician (lawl) were fairly uneventful with regards to findings. Save the occasional porn finds. (I would guess it was from a girlfriend's ultimatum or a Jesus Find, it was hard to determine.)

Oh, one time I found an philosophy of religion book from the late 50s (the most recent register). The wording was exquisite. I wish I still had it. I loaned it out and never saw it again.
