It was a very short trial (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070820/ap_on_re_us/obit_helmsley;_ylt=ApRGDUrH9GynWkYN.bH5_Dys0NUE). She tried to get out of it, citing health reasons, but that didn't go over as planned.

(I'm not laughing at death I'm laughing at its characterization.)

I'd feel bad for a person whose own AP obituary, for fuck's sake, dwells on what an awful bitch she was but the fact that she was an awful bitch sort of mitigates that tendency.

 I always thought death was for the little people.

When I was a kid I used to get Leona Helmsley mixed up with Tammy Faye Baker.

It's hard to think of her as anything else considering that article. When an obituary can't put you in a positive light nothing can.

After her son died, she sued the estate for money and property she said her son had borrowed, and an eviction notice was served on her son's widow, Mimi.

Good gravy!

Bitches stick together. (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070829/helmsley_s_pooch.html)
Yahoo:
Helmsley left her beloved white Maltese, named Trouble, a $12 million trust fund, according to her will, which was made public Tuesday in surrogate court.

She also left millions for her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, who was named to care for Trouble in her absence, as well as two of four grandchildren from her late son Jay Panzirer -- so long as they visit their father's grave site once each calendar year.

Otherwise, she wrote, neither will get a penny of the $5 million she left for each.

Helmsley left nothing to two of Jay Panzirer's other children -- Craig and Meegan Panzirer -- for "reasons that are known to them," she wrote.

...The mausoleum, she ordered, must be "washed or steam-cleaned at least once a year." She left behind $3 million for the upkeep of her final resting place in Westchester County, where she is buried with her husband, Harry Helmsley.

I just read that. Hopefully the "evil" grandchildren will find a way to bilk everyone else out of the cash. Just because it would be funny. ;)

On the bright side(?), that article says that the billions expected from the sale of their homes and property will all go to the Helmsley Charitable Trust. I don't know how to research charitable trusts to find out what kind of work they do, but I was able to Google up prior donations to a NY hospital and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

I hope the Evil Grandchildren(TM) managed to nab all that, too. They can disperse it to charities, but no post-mortem brownie points for the Bitch Queen.
