Heh, I saw your thread calling for a moritorium, not long after I quit the forums. But by then I think I'd already quit modding there. Honestly, I had to choose between real life and net drama which was in very high gear at the time. A self ban gave me closure and helped me avoid several days of wasted anger and furious key tapping. I do appreciate that you gave it to me without question at the time. I also appreciate being invited back.

I have missed a lot of people here.

From time to time, yes, I certainly did wonder what everyone was up to. Besides, the spies I hired couldn't even use a computer and they kept telling me you all had moved to Vegas and Freethought meetings were now held in the Luxor Hotel. I almost went broke paying those guys bills, and they didn't even have it right at all...

Ah, I was worried for a moment. It's so comforting to be among fellow pedants. :grouphug:

Lurker! :mob: har!

aside: it was so weird to go on forums and see 'let's do it for the lurkers' and etc. At IIDB, which was only my second forum, that phrase was constantly bandied about. (lurkers were never really discussed on the vidyagame forum I went to before that). But I always tried to use the phrase 'browser' (as in, a person who browses not the webbrowser program) instead because lurker had negative connotations to me.

I'd been on IRC for years, and at least in the channels I'd been involved with lurking was considered the height of rudeness, akin to eavesdropping on your friends' conversations (ok, not really akin; that's exactly what it was!) and "lurker" was a pretty major perjorative on par with 'troll' (indeed, constant lurking was usually considered a very passive aggressive form of trolling and harassment). There was a fine line between just idling and lurking, though.

Terminology can be so weird sometimes.

Good point about the meaning of 'lurker', Novowels. I'm so used to hearing/using it to mean "one who reads more than posts" that I forgot it has negative connotations. Personally I've got no beef with people who prefer reading to posting. Due to a heavy workload I've done a lot more reading than posting myself in the last year, despite my natural inclination to babble.

There was a fine line between just idling and lurking, though.
True, they're spelled with different letters. The difference ends there. I'd hardly call them synonyms, even if you don't consider 'lurking' to be harassment like it was back in the day in irc. Idle just means you aren't active or around; whereas lurking isn't necessarily inactive at all, just non-participatory. In any case, outside of the computer terminology (which has changed over the years!) lurking certainly has a negative connotation, so it's hardly a surprise that it would start out that way in chatting's infancy.

If there's a debate over this (that I'm unaware of!) perhaps a thread should be started about it instead of gumming up Brimshack's thread, I only meant it as an interesting aside to the history of the word after vm's usage of it.

...and, you guys aren't gonna out splellerize me!

It may be a liddle late on accounta I tooked it easy on liv thics time, but it's time I tolded the story of the last too yirs:

Okay, sews i ona surfin way was bein' and then I read lotsa stuff bout lotsa stuff an' everwhere stuff people maed, an eye lukt atta clok and gots all mad, sad no more fer me. Said that like awhole buncha times, byebye here and there, even to Pakistani guys, then I'm all offa the net fer like 2 years, mostly, 'cept ta' bug Kristins sometimes. That mutch y'all know.

But what you din't no is that I hadda great gal fer awhile there, 'ceptin she wuz Sweedish, so it was all yust this and yust that, and since she was all hiker-like in Switzycheese land when she were younger, it was kinda danger-Russ. She'd say wanna go ferwok, and I'd say sure, an' like be ona top a mountain 4 hours later (Wheezy-wheezy mean glarin like at happy Euro-Lady). So, she says gotta luncherize ona mountaintoppy, lookin over a whole lotta feetses ona way down, but I says maybe bout the middle, then I drink awl her water and scoul. Old jurmin guy says hai. He din't need no water allaway up. I hate old jurmin guy. Mad at cute Swede lady too, awl happy an me wheezin' gonna die ona mountain top. Swede lady don't laik spice, an' I no ken subtle foodzes on accounta tacos mai dad maid (laik alla time). But real fun, nice lady, kindist purson ever dune mett. Ceptin when she haiks.

Not dating now on accounta bad figs.

Sos, I started this busniss, done real good, spent lotsa dough till it wuz awl gone nau. Brother says gotsa maik dough, that's what budiness do.

Big waitt set ina back room. Sleap in the middle room on accounta big waits need thuh spaise, cause lifting big heavy is bliss. Wait set sits there laik 2 years. Shirts awl bigger now.

Kitties laik back room on accounta no-one goes there now, but they say meow an' make me feed 'em & stuph. Fido and Junkie happy Mommy stays home ever nait now, steady commuterizin' ta' thuh rez. Daddies don't mean nuthin ta' Fido and Junkie, sos I'm there Mawmie.

I'ma teachin' it up good till bos get fired by a Bad Dean type person named "Bad Dean Type Person." ...sos she gets maybe whole buncha people resign on accounta stupid pay-math and general bitchyess. She fires moar cause they gots labs she wunts fer other things. Then supervisor-o-mine gets rittn up laik a whole buncha times, so shie sez "fuk thics shit" I'ma get me a Masters, then Dean-type flunkie sez, Dan you gotta go there or go there, but ewe kan't stai hier. First there is lotsa ministrators but secont there is closer ta' home. I go 2nd there, but new boss is a dumb-asssss Moar-on. So I sez, 'fuck this shit, I'ma get me a masters." Only without thuh last part, so now I say "______ Houzes, mai I help ewe?" That, aend I spent money on bizniz on accounta moar taim nau. Stil knot sure bout makin' dough part.
