We are very close to buying a new house, if all goes well.

The attic is unfinished.

We wanna finish it. We may have an actual budget, because we have equity in our existing house. We may have a very very narrow budget.

What do we need to know? I was once told that it's very important to have space between insulation and roof, or something. How much? How important?

We're also thinking about skylights, and thinking things like "someone professional would have to install those".

Surely, FF has people who know the answers!

How do you plan to use the space? Skylights can actually be a negative value wise as they are difficult to clean and maintain.

Depends on the climate. You need to become slightly familiar with Rvalues. It's very important to leave space!

If you contact me off-list, I will send you a book about home maintenance, repair, and improvement. It deals with issues like insulation in attics, basements, walls, etc. Also deals with various types of skylights, as well has how to refinish walls and floors.
