View Full Version : Frustration with vBulletin

I usually cruise the vBulletin forums in "linear mode." That way, I can see all the messages in the order they were posted. When I make a new message, I click the "new reply" button at the top of the page. If I am in the first page of the thread at the time I do that, then my message is treated as a reply to the OP and it can be easily seen by everyone as expected. I don't know why this is, but if I click new reply while I am on the second, third, or anywhere past the first page of the thread, then my message will be treated as a reply to the first message of that page instead of the OP, which means that people viewing in "hybrid mode" will see my message only after troweling through repeated "More replies below current depth..." I posted a big long rant (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?postid=30820#post30820) in the gun control thread and it is was treated as a reply to warrenly's message simply because his post was at the top of the second page. Livius or viscous, can you please move it to the top?

I really don't think we can do that, Abe. The only way I can think of to accomplish it is for us to delete your current post and then for you to recreate it using the quote or the quick reply button on the OP.

As for the longer term issue, perhaps there's some way to change the Post Reply button so it shows as replies to the OP in hybrid mode nomatter what page the reply is posted to, but of course I know nothing of the technical possibilities and I'm not sure if it would always be a good thing.

I don't think the hybrid or threaded modes get used very often, if it's any consolation.

OK, I'll edit my old post and post a new one, thanks.

Oh poop. Sorry about that, Abe. I wasn't trying to be definite in my first response; just to say that I knew of no way to fix it. Anyway, I'll shut up now.

It doesn't matter either way, really. I could've modified the database to change the post order but it was just as easy for Abe to recreate his post. As for how to handle this problem in the future we'll have to look to see if it's still a problem after we upgrade to the next major release of vBulletin. For now I'm afraid you'll have to just make sure you click reply on the OP if that's how you want it to format.
