If you've been following the tech news as much as I have, you've probably been hearing these "new iPod" rumors for weeks and this won't come as much of a surprise to you. But if you haven't, Apple just announced a new line of iPods, including a wider Nano (w/ video) and the iPod "Touch" which is basically the iPhone without phone. It has the touch screen, WiFi, Safari web browser and YouTube access. 8GB is $299... the price for the 16GB is $399.

Check out the live reportage of their press event here (http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/05/steve-jobs-live-apples-the-beat-goes-on-special-event/).

Oh yeah, and a new 160 GB iPod "classic" (what used to be the iPod video).

And a new WiFi store that will eventually be accessible in every Starbucks, along with the ability to buy whatever music is playing at a Starbucks you're visiting with the touch of a button. Weird.

I changed the title of this thread from "New iPods" to "Apple Product News" so this would fit better:

They're lowering the price of the 8 GB iPhone from $599 to $399. Sucks to be an early adopter!

Pretty cool. Now the only question, should I update my old original iPod mini to a video playing nano or the web browsing touchable iPod touch.

I'll hold onto my 80GB player for now. I'll have to, because I just ordered the high-end iMac and a boatload of software to work on a budding project for some friends.

Yeah my 80gb iPod video is more than sufficient for my music/video needs, but I will get an iPhone when I'm employed again.

Here's the new nano:

Fuck :glare: :fuming: :cries:

Barely two months post release and a massive price cut -- 1/3 off FFS. There is a snowballs chance in hell that AT&T will honor that for early buyers now.

And here I was thinking I should have bought an 8gb model to begin with. Kinda glad I didn't because then I'd really be getting fucked.

Jobs didn't even mention the 4gb iPhone, so Engadget concluded that they're killing it off.

Yep, I just checked the (fully updated) Apple website and the 4gb is no longer available for purchase.

Hooray! More overpriced Apple products that I'll never buy! :woopdedo:

8 or 16 GB for the touch? Fuck that! I'm glad I didn't want one anyway.

Ditto.
I impulse bought a Nano this year and I only kept it because the place where I bought it (fye) would not take it back once I opened the box. I came really really close to just handing it to a random stranger in the mall. I was livid.
But, I've kept it and the ONLY good thing I can say about it is that the physical design is nice, very slim and light. Almost every other aspect of it has disappointed me. As a result I have used it less and less.
I've been so thoroughly aggravated with my experience that it may be the last Apple product I buy.

Huh! I have been loving my iPod. I got an 80GB a month or so back. I'm happy. It does what I want it to do, it's straightforward, and it holds all the music we own.

I am sort of an Apple fanboy, in some ways. My main desktops are a Mini running NetBSD and a Mini running OS X, I have a MacBook Pro, and I'm using another Mini, running Server, as our household network thing.

BTW, I have a pair of G5 towers for sale; I'm "upgrading" to Minis to make the move easier.

I'm a bit of an iFanboy as well, but not to the point where I can't be critical of the products. I love all 3 of my iPods, I just really hoped the new "Touch" would be at least 60 gigs, if not 80. As it stands, I've got no reason to upgrade since my best/biggest/newest one (called the "iPod" when I bought it, formerly the "iPod Video", now apparently the "iPod Classic") has almost 4x the capacity of their newest and shiniest model. When the iPhone came out, I was like, "I like everything about it except the phone part, and the micro capacity. I bet the new iPod will be exactly what I want!" and I was sorely mistaken. It's a good thing, too, since I really wasn't planning on buying one. Am I making it clear yet that the capacity is important to me? I have 100s of DVDs worth of programming on my iPod that I carry around with me when I travel and I have the hookups to push it out to the hotel TV, so I don't have to watch it on the tiny screen, so I really had no need to upgrade to the Touch's larger screen, I just thought it would be pretty, and cool, and pretty cool. But it's not.

Great. Now you've inspired me to name all my iPods after the houses.

Need to buy a fourth one for that...

I probably had a bit of the firewhisky in me when I went to see it.

I want the 160!!

I can't think of a use for a 160. Our MP3 collection is maybe 45GB. I'm thinking of re-ripping everything at the new house at a higher bit rate (I think it's 160 now) and maybe bringing that to, oh, 60 or something. Of course, no video for me. Composite out? I'll pass.

The iTunes WiFi store is a nice idea, and a step in the right direction, but the iTunes store needs to be accessible on the iPhone from any connection, not just WiFi in select Starbucks.

viscousmemories
09-06-2007, 04:03 PM
Oh it will be accessible from anywhere on the iPhone, just not on the iPod Touch. (As I understand it).

Let fury fade and hearts heal... (http://gameinvasion.comcast.net/gameinvasion/news/article/1189097520199_iphone_price_cuts_spark_consumer_backlash?cvqh=itn_iphone)

Apple, if I read that correctly, is offering a rebate for the price difference after its much-sooner-than-expected price slash.

viscousmemories
09-06-2007, 09:19 PM
Actually that's just a minor change from their normal policy. They've always offered a 14-day money back guarantee if it's unopened, they're just adding that they'll give you a $200 rebate if it's been opened. You still have to have bought it within the last 14 days. I don't personally think customers have any right to complain, though. By now everyone should know that with the current pace of technology a bleeding-edge purchase today might be a dinosaur tomorrow.

Meanwhile I read speculation that the price-cut is all about clearing their warehouses to make way for a 3G version.

Oh for real? I thought you could get to the iTunes store from any WiFi connection, and the Starbucks deal was just for the free connection and the "now playing" bits.

Anywho, suoivbo totally talked me into wanting one yesterday. :glare:

viscousmemories

That's what I think too, Steve. You just can't access iTunes when you're not on a WiFi connection like you can with the iPhone.

Ensign Steve
09-07-2007, 12:35 AM
Ah, I see! Yeah cuz this Touch is WiFi only, no data plan. On accounta it's not a phone.

I tried to post to this thread from the Apple store earlier tonight, but the iPhone keyboard is hard for me to use. I'm excited about the 160GB iPod, and I'd be more interested in the iPhone if it were comparable to at least the 40 gig iPod.

Looks like Mr. Jobs doesn't like getting hatemail.

Open Letter to iPhone Customers (http://www.apple.com/hotnews/openiphoneletter/)

In brief: Apple has decided to give everyone who bought an iPhone since day one a $100 store credit.

I might be getting a new cellphone for christmas, and we're tossed up between the razr and the krzr. I like the razr, but I've never seen the krzr in person. Do you have any advice??
