Fools would class smilies as a form of self-actualisation, and therefore not important until you've satisfied the lower needs. But Popanjic (1993) was the first to demonstrate that smilies (then called emoticons) are at least part of "Belongingness and Love", and I don't think any of us would doubt that. How can you feel a sense of belonging, let alone esteem, in a forum that doesn't meet your smilie needs?

Current work by John Suler at Rider shows that in developed cyber communities, smilies clearly function at the "Safety" level. In the altered states of consciousness he attributes to online interaction, not having appropriate smilies is actually a threat to what corresponds to physical safety.
