The Return of The Limerick Showdown


We have enough contestants to kick off round one of the limerick competition. Here's how it will go.

1) Contestants PM one OR TWO limericks to Crumb on certain subject.
2) Crumb posts the limericks and starts a poll.
3) Limericists receive points according to their best placing limerick.
4) Crumb announces winners and starts next round.

Remember: Anyone may join or leave the limerick competition at any time. If you miss around or two, don't worry you still have a chance to win.:yup:

ROUND I ~ Historical Period

For round one you must set your limerick in an historical period. Anytime prior to WWII.

Use this guide (http://www.sfu.ca/~finley/discussion.html) to make sure your limerick fits the form.

Deadline for submissions is 8am Pacific Wednesday 9/26.

Remember you can enter up to TWO limericks!

I composed my second limerick while on the first half of my 120 mile VROOM today. :motor:

I finally had to pull over and jot it down so that I wouldn't have to keep running it through my head so that I wouldn't forget it. :giggle: I thought it might be prudent to focus on the road rather than the limerick before this.. :bikefall:.. happened except at much higher speeds. :seestars:

Although, forming the limerick in my head probably kept me from having a heart attack today when someone almost made me into road kill from behind while I was at a stop. :yipes: I was so focused on the limerick that I never saw the smoke coming from the tires while he tried to stop his car in time. :stunned: The only thing I caught of it was the end of the skid at the end where he stopped just before hitting me. I only learned of it afterward when I asked my husband what happened. He said he was glad I didn't see it, and I must say, so am I. :dontlook:

To those of you who know that I talk with Watser? a lot; I decided not to run my limericks by Watser? like I sometimes do with posts and such to see what he thinks of the grammar, puncuation, and how it sounds in general. :study:

The reason for this decision is to avoid any possible bias should Watser? decide to vote on the limericks and I thought I'd post this decision in case this had occured to anyone else. :=)

The good news is that we have lots of great submissions. I regret setting the time limit all the way out to Wednesday morning. But I'll stick to it because it is the first round. The time limits will be much shorter in the later rounds.

I think it will work out though. If you don't think a limerick is the proper form don't vote for it. You can even bring it up in the voting thread for discussion, though we don't want to identify whose limericks are whose.

Try and stick to the limerick form. Feel free to publicly dissect the form of the first round limericks in the voting thread after the polls have closed. :D Hopefully all of us can learn to write better limericks that way.

In round V any limerick will do, on any subject. You can use any unsubmitted limericks from earlier rounds, or you can compose fresh limericks on a subject of your choosing.

Limericks are due by 10AM pacific Wednesday morning. As usual you can submit one or two limericks and will receive the points from your best performing limerick.

Though maybe the topic should be a smiley based limerick. :thinkup: For this round I could include smilies on or around a limerick, but they can't actually stand in place of words in the limerick, because not all smilies clearly stand for a single word or phrase.

So Round V can be any limerick you want, but you can do a smiley themed limerick and I will include the appropriate smilies!
