The HiRISE instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has found what are believed to be entrances to caverns on Mars (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap070528.html). NASA believes this one is 100 meters wide at the opening, but must be wider inside and so deep no light is cast on the floor unless sunlight is directly overhead.

They have found, and named, seven caves near Mars equator (http://www.reuters.com/article/scienceNews/idUSN2138422720070921?feedType=RSS&feedName=scienceNews). It is theorized that the caves may be niches containing current alien life forms or evidence of ones in the past. The holes, or caves, were named after loved ones of researchers on the project: Dena, Chloe, Wendy, Annie, Abbey, Nikki and Jeanne.

I have another theory. I think it's a pool of pitch, heavy black crude oil, just waiting for Halliburton and Exxon to exploit. All they're waiting for is the U.S. invasion. This is why Bush said we're going to Mars. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3381531.stm)
