This is classic. From a Senior at an Ivy League institution. The original was published in the Columbia Spectator recently, but that website's sortof offline right now with the Ahmedinijad business, and the letter/article is displayed in full at the above link.

Apparently this Political Science major (and her mother) was totally unaware that her brother was attending the premier training school for US Marines and Naval officers.

for anyone else out there considering a career in the academy, let it be known: the U.S. Naval Academy is not an elite college; it is first and foremost a branch of the U.S. military

Thanks for that heads-up.

I can't wait to read the next installment of this four-parter.

It is a NAVAL academy, after all.

The string of words "not an elite college; it is first and foremost" seem to convey something rather different than "gasp".

In particular, they clearly have the potential to be informative to someone already aware that the Naval Academy is military.
