Check this pic out. Look between the bottom of the aircraft, and the start of the wake.

If the pic doesn't display for some reason, look at http://home.comcast.net/~bzee1a/ and the picture just over half-way down entitled "Those guys in the boat better be wearing ear protection! "
Pics taken (not by me) this weekend in SF.

Those refraction lines are pretty cool.
I like the pelican shot best, though.

Them bastards buzzed the whole city for like 3-4 days not that I didn't think it was cool.

You can see the shockwaves going from the aircraft to the water, and causing the wake. They show up as linear distortions in the picture.

Hello CT!

I thought you needed to be supersonic to generate a trailing shockwave. What speed was that pilot doing?

Mach .99 or so. It was the 'sneak pass', so popular at airshows, where the pilot flies at about the speed of sound from an unexpected direction, so the airplane gets to the crowd at about the same time as the sound does: No warning.

That looks more like Thundercracker than Shockwave.

Cool pic of the F-22 though. A shame there aren't more.

Yeah, if it was Mach 1, the shockwave would separate from the fuselage of the aircraft and trail behind it.

Whew, I wasn't supposed to be seeing some pattern of Jesus' face or anything in the refraction. Cause I sure didn't see that.
That would scare the crap out of me coming up like that, but I suppose those guys in the boat were hoping to lose the rest of their hearing.

My guess is that it isn't nearly as close to that boat as it appears due to the flattening of images by telescopic lenses. Still gonna be loud though.
