So PV was out here this past weekend for a low-key time hanging out with me and the kids--playing catch, checking out the local haunted house (they said it was kid-friendly; they lied), and eating way too much. It was pretty perfect.

He also had an informal interview for a position here at the university (informal because it hasn't even been advertised yet, but a friend clued me into the upcoming vacancy) and they seem really interested. Either way, he put in his notice at his job, and gets the hell outta dodge and off to Iowa next month. So woo hoo, only a little more :iowaorbust:

Iowa is actually quite nice. Just enough rolling hills and trees to make it interesting (I'm from central IL, so its not flat/corn by those standards, but pretty close). Nice lake nearby, no rush hour to speak of. More likely to hit a deer than anything else. Big enough cities to have the ethnic food I'll miss from here though. And no fucking tourists!!!

And the best sex west of the Mississippi. Yee haw!!!

Congratulations you guys. I have to ask, which university are you at? Please don't say U of I, you're talking to a former cyclone here. :D

And as for Iowa's tourist attractions may I add: Eldon, IA and the house from American Gothic, the Lincoln Highway and bridge, the Mesquakie (now Meskwaki) Settlement (and casino!), the treehouse - house around Marshalltown, Lake Okoboji and the site of the Spirit Lake Massacre, the Des Moines Art Center, the Amana colonies, the Dragoon trails and the old fort in Fort Dodge. I would also add the Iowa State Fair but it is of course seasonal. You know recently a coworker told me I was thoroughly Iowan and now I'm thinking it might be true...

Um, ok, I won't say it then. :giggle: Would it help if I mentioned we have a joint program with the vet school at ISU? Everyone from out of state doesn't realize there's a difference between U of I and ISU anyway--all those Iowa schools are the same, right?

And I gotta say that ISU kicks ass just for its butterfly house, if nothing else...

So for tourist attractions Iowa has....

A house
A bridge
A highway
A casino
A treehouse where A massacre took place
AN arts center
A fort
A set of trails
A set of colonies.

I think I have all that shit in my backyard here in Maryland.

Actually the Dragoon trails are kind of neat, it's just neat countryside althought it is middle of nowhere (up here in my neck of the woods). It goes through Dolliver Park which is kind of neat to see. Although if you are much of a hiker I would highly recommend Ledges State Park outside of Boone, they have awesome trails and it's just beautiful there in the river valley. And the Des Moines Art Center is actually quite impressive...ya know for Iowa  I love the Amana Colonies and we still go every year before Christmas. And I usually take home 10 bottles of fruit wine but I assure you I go for the "atmosphere".

Geez, look at me going on like this, I should work for the Iowa Board of Tourism or something.

Perhaps you could call it Cornarnia? The kids would like it better.

The threshold of altitudinal variation sufficient to matter is precisely 2' higher than what you actually have.

...my geo-bigotry is a self-contained castle of invincible ...um, invincibility. You have fallen into a category and you can't get out.

So in other words we're right at the event horizon for this particular category? Great, I'll drive up to Wisconsin and stand on a hill :P

Heh, that'll work.

Oh hell, Iowa is nowhere near as flat as Nebraska/Kansas.

And none of those are as flat as Eastern North Dakota/Northwestern Minnesota. Up there, you can actually see the Earth curve.
