I posted this over at the FF support forums and got no replies, so I'll try it here.

I recently did a clean install of OS X Leopard, and downloaded FF again. I'm having a problem with Cyrillic input.

When I change my keyboard layout to Russian and try to type in any field in Firefox, i.e. the search bar and address bar, everything I type is rendered as question marks. However, if I do a google search from the search bar, for example, it will return the correct results for what I entered. Interestingly, if I go to Google (www.google.com) and try to enter Cyrillic, I get the same question marks. The search box on Yahoo.com, however, renders them fine.

It works fine in Safari, and typing in the message body box for this forum will also render Cyrillic correctly. Firefox can render Cyrillic pages fine, no matter what the encoding. It's only when I attempt to enter Cyrillic characters that I get question marks.

Any ideas?

Do you have the language installed? The standard FF download only comes with US English.

I don't have the language installed, but I don't think that should matter. I don't need the Russian localization, just the capability to see what Cyrillic characters I'm entering. I'm thinking there could be a problem with the default font that Firefox uses. I may have lost the Cyrillic charset somehow.

What's you system font? Can you see the cyrillic characters in that?

I'm pretty sure the system font is Geneva. Geneva CY, the Cyrillic charset, is installed and works fine. I can type in Cyrillic in every application except for Firefox. And I can type in Cyrillic in Firefox, but it just shows up as a question mark, so I'm typing blind.

I still suggest installing the language. I get the same problem if I don't have it installed. Then again I don't read cyrillic so it doesn't matter much to me. I would also suggest checking that the charset is set to unicode.

So I downloaded a Ukrainian language pack (for some reason I can't find a Russian language pack to install as an extension) and had the same problem.

But then I downloaded Russian Firefox and had no problem. I don't want my Firefox totally in Russian, though. Do you know of any way to install multiple localizations?

Not on your OS Chuck. What does it say in FF Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Languages?

Yeah, I was looking for Russian language packs for Firefox. There's a Ukrainian localization package that can be installed as an extension.

My languages are given as:

English/United States
English
Russian

Ok, problem solved I think. I downloaded a Russian localization of Firefox and installed an English-language pack. Now I need to turn the spell-checker off.

Good.
