View Full Version : So... do we open presents now?

So, there was talk of doing this Sunday and Monday, sort of overlapping, as we get around to it. Any objections to this crazy scheme?

Oh c'mon... Surely we can all wait one more night? Starting the thread now works just so we can get all lathered up about it.
I know! Let's try and guess what we've got! I've got a smallish but quite heavy box and I know who sent it cause I told him to. :giggles:
Who's next?

Tease!!
Mine's in a box about 10x4x9, and whatever it is feels a bit smaller. I'm not sure if there's any packing material inside, because its skittering around in there, and feels slightly off balance. I want to say its a book, because it seems shaped that way, and is heavy like a book, but it just doesn't feel like a book. I also hear a noise, like its wrapped in heavy paper or something.

I have a package, looks about book-sized, from an address that gives me a very good guess as to who sent it. So I'm guessing book, but I can't tell.
LadyShea
01-10-2005, 01:23 AM
I know who mine is from, but I cannot even begin to guess what's in it. It's a rather large boxes, and whatever is inside doesn't thump or rattle and seems very close to the size of the box. Either it's something made of fabric, or it is so well padded I can't determine the size or material.

It's Monday!
Hi guys, thank you for the welcome Liv, Freemonkey, and Luna. :) I Just got my package and am at the library. I assumed it was ok to open the package. So I did. Thank you to my Santa. I almost cried because the gifts were so extravagant. I was sent two beautiful pair of silver earrings and they are just the style I like, I'll describe them better later. And a lovely heart ornament that will still get used since I decided to keep a seasonal tree in my living room till after Easter. All in a cute little Santa tin. I'll see if my heat damaged digital will take a clear enough pic of the gifts.
Anyway, thank you. I am rushed or I would write more. But I intend to give my Santa a proper thank you later.

Yay! Someone broke the veil! Your gifts sound gorgeous, Beth. Can you tell who your Santa is? (I know! I know!)
LadyShea
01-10-2005, 03:11 PM
My Secret Santa was Brimshack, and either he's a world class box packer or he had it done professionally. Styro-popcorn, bubble wrap, and a single flawless piece of tape on the shipping box.
So, I dug through the popcorn to find a lovely little gargoyle statue, the kind that sits on a shelf or ledge and his legs dangle down. He has his hand on his chin in a sort of "thinker" pose. The sticker on the bottom says he is a baby gargoyle and describes his species. He is going to be great out in my garden or on my screened porch!
I also found an antique book for my library! It's a Greek Grammar and is dated 1864. I love antiques of all kinds, but a book is just so special.
Last but not least, a Les Claypool CD. He is Frankie's favorite bass player, and by extension mine.
I couldn't be more thrilled, they're all perfect! Thank you Brimshack!

Mine is from RevDahlia and it happens to be exactly something I need right now. Its an "Alleged Lucky Flame Candle" Its about 8 inches tall, multi colored, pillar shaped and in a glass with good luck sayings, numbers and pictures all over it. I'll try to take some pics later. The reason it was all slidey and stuff is because it was in lovely bejeweled and tasseled gift bag.

How could I be disappointed by such a jovial little fellow?
That is some pig! And you were thoughtful enough to include batteries. Thank you for the laugh. I opened it in front of a co-worker and we both giggled at the adorable little pig. I'm sure that my daughter will love him and his oinking.
Rest assured, he's in a good home. We'll take very good care of him. I wouldn't dream of returning him, he's a happy addition to our menagerie now.
besides, I can't return him...I plan on marking him up and showing my daughter where bacon, ham and pork chops come from....a wondrous magical animal

Oooh, there's a sensor!
I thought he might be a piggy bank and kept turning him over and over to look for an opening. This did result in my trying to peer into his well-rounded ass.
He's a charming little porker. And like myself, he's "Made in China". He's got laughing eyes and a great smile. He's got a sensor in his mouth that triggers a series of oinks when activated. Maybe I'll use him as a room guard in my office. Whenever someone opens my door, he'll oink at them.
Kinda like a "watch pig". Everyone could use a good "watch pig".
And the sentiment on the card was very sweet, thank you Lady Shea.

Okay, okay. I'll confess. My Secret Santa was my dear friend Lauri D. Unfortunately she missed all the discussion about when the exchange was supposed to take place, so she sent it via UPS overnight two days before Christmas! I decided to go ahead and open it then so she didn't have to feel like the money she spent rushing it to me was wasted, which seemed like a reasonable solution to me. It had nothing to do with my being impatient. :yup:
Inside the box, I found:
A finger sized skate scooter :skating:
A collection of four cylindrical containers with different colored lids, holding flavored toothpicks. :toothpick:
A box of Nestles' Butterfinger Hot Chocolate :hotchoc: (really good stuff), btw.
An assortment of glow in the dark stars, galaxies, comets, etc. :kass:
And a bunch of hard candies :lolly: and caramels, long since devoured.
Thanks, Lauri! :) :glomp:

Holy Shit!
Wildernesse sent me a book. But the amazing thing is that the odds of successfully finding a book about Navajo history that I don't already have are extremely low. ...and she did it! I promise to read it ASAP and bore y'all to death by recounting its contents many times on the pretext of a slim connection to another topic.
She also sent Fido and Junkmail some toy mice.
This is really cool.

After reading the card, and realizing that my presents bag is an awesome adventure bag (http://www.wrapsacks.com/index.php) that I can track on its trips around the world (yes, the world! my presents bag is very ambitious)--the goodies inside are a) yummy cinnamint toothpaste b) fab spa towel, and c) something that will save me from future deodorant sagas, mineral spray deodorant that liv told me about!
I'm really, really resisting the urge to go take a bath and then re-get-ready for the day. Heehee.

LIV SENT ME FOOD PORN!
It's a book called "The Elements of Taste" by Gary Kunz and Peter Kaminsky. The recipes are catagorised by 'taste' - spiced aromatic, sharp/bitter, starchy. The pictures are big, bold, and colourful, showing the simplistic intricacy of each dish.
Definately tops the other stuff I've been beating my meat to lately. Thanks liv, you're a dahhhling as always :D.

:woohoo: I got giant purple font. That has to be good.
Now it's time for me to confess: I was kind of the tie-breaker, so when Bree signed up under the wire, I gave her to myself, but it was totally fortuitous because I love that book so much I'm always ready to give it away. I even took advantage of the Secret Santa address bonanza to send a copy to RevDahlia, but hers was from Amazon whereas Bree's is my very own (slightly worn) copy. Can you see now how the plan comes together? There will be a thread. Oh yes... There will be a thread. :pleased:

Some people have very few books, and books are special treats to them. Some people pretty much have enough books. Then you get people who are talking about scrapping the guest room because we need to split the library into fiction and non-fiction. I'm in that category, and I always like books.

Freemonkey was my Santa. I did not mention her name because I did not know if it was a faux pas of the SS rules for me to know who my Santa was. I uploaded two pics of the earrings. I cannot make the glass heart show up well for some reason. With the flash it is almost invisable. But it is very delicate and pretty. :) One pair of earrings looks to be peridot, both green and yellow, or perhaps peridot and citrine. The other, the pretty heart earrings, I think is either blue agate or lapis and garnet. Anyway, these are perfect for me and I have the hearts in now. She was even thoughtful enough to include an alcohol wipe so that I could clean them to put them on. I never woulda thunk, but that showed a lot of thoughtfulness. Somehow Freemonkey knew I loved silver earrings in these style and the ornament was a perfect guess as I collect them. I will think of her every year as I hand the ornament on my Victorian tree. And she also sent me a nice card, in which I saw lovely handwriting that looks similar to my favorite aunt's.
Thank you.
And Liv, thank you for covering for me. I feel really bad about Wildy's gift. I have honestly left my house only once since Dec 18th, on Christmas Eve. For the week before Christmas it was because of some car problems and a sick little girl, but then I got attacked by the bug just a few days before Christmas. So thanks Liv.

Hi Beth, I forgot to put in an explanation. thought you'd like the earrings because you've mentioned more than once that you liked girly stuff. :nail: And what's more girly than hearts and shiny things?! I wore them a couple times, but I figured you'd get more use out of them than I did. Also, you wrote more than once about Christmas decorations, so that a was no-brainer.
I did clean the earrings myself, but I thought maybe you'd feel better knowing you did it too.
As for my handwriting, pretty maybe, but I'm surprised you could read it. Anyway, I'm glad you like them.

Hmm, well, the card is labeled "sustainability by design" and marked "Martin Hill environmental communications." It appears to be a sculpture by Martin Hill, whose "commissions include: Environmental art/communications. Sculpture, photography, design. Exhibitions, publishing, licensing. Strategic communcations design for sustainable ventures." It also includes a description: "This sculpture was made from nature's materials found at the site. My photographs are all that remain of it because it has been harmlessly returned by the elements to the natural system from which it came. A cyclical approach to the use of the earth's living systems and ecological services is the foundation for sustainable societies, and its universal adoption is our hope for the future." The photo itself is labeled: "Pahutukawa leaf line. Kare Kare Beach, New Zealand." (sorry if I haven't spelled these correctly; the print is so small I can barely see it.) A quotation from David Suzuki is also included in a box on the back: "The most powerful survival principle of life is diversity; there is no single RIGHT WAY that works -- there will be hundreds of thousands."

It was published in 1987 and has the kind of styling and recipes that you don't see too much anymore, so it has terrific artifact value... in fact, I think some of the pictures are worthy of scanning, blowing up and using for kitchen decor. Also the writing is snappy and funny. I just love it. (And speaking of food porn, I'm so looking forward to the "Elements" thread...)
I recognize the style of writing in the card, and I'm almost connecting it with the return address on the package... and I guess I could go back over this thread and do a process-of-elimination thing... but for right now, I'm brainfarting on who my Santa is. Thank you, Mystery Santa!
Freemonkey, I'm glad you liked your candle. I bought it in a Santeria pharmacy in Los Angeles a couple years back, and it's followed me around since, but I think it wanted to be released into the wild.
This was so much fun, you guys. Big claps to liv and everyone.

So, who got a hand-written card? And did the writing match up with the person?
Liv hand-wrote (actually, printed) me a card. Her writing is perfectly straight, right across the board. I'm so jealous - I can't even do this with lines on the page, let alone without. She wrote in a lovely sparkly blue gel pen and highlighted the pre-written message in the card with purple sparklies. Her grammar is, as usual, impeccable :).

Is it too late to sign up? :chin: Just kidding.
What a cool idea!I'll send you a present, AspenMama.
You might want to open the box up at the curb where the motorfreight company drops it off because you might have a bit of difficulty toting me... er, the package into your house. :D
Why you flirt! :flirt:
Will you be wrapped up tight and adorned with a pretty sparkly bow?

This was a really fun idea. Many thanks to livius drusus and the Secret Santas! :) :bundance: :yes!:
I would like to echo my thanks to everyone involved and even those not involved for a wonderful holiday season. The Secret Santa thing was fun and I can't wait for it to be Christmas, so we can do it all over again.
I'd also like to point out that livius did a great job in matching up people. This is evidenced by the way cosmic forces and destiny allowed for an interesting sequence of postings.
In here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27946&postcount=24) , I proposed asking everyone what they wanted for Christmas, in hopes of getting some idea of what to give.
And who should respond? None other, than my Secret Santa recipient (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=27947&postcount=25)!
Also, in here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=31390&postcount=91), I teased a poster for revealing the gift before Opening Day.
And who was I teasing? None other, than my own Secret Santa (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=31389&postcount=90).
I tell ya, that's kismet in action, baby!
So, this is praise for an admin who clearly knows her forum members well. And also a warning, the powers of livius may well be beyond human comprehension. Cross her at your own peril.

Ok, well, I had misplaced my package that had my SS's addy and hence I was unable to properly thank her. Unless the kids tossed it into the fireplace just now, I found the package and I will thank her.
Anyway, her gift meant alot to me. I was in a state of fear and for some reason it made me feel less frightened of being online. I'll write more to her in person, but I wanted to say that my SS present really touched me. Thank you.

Hey can I win a prize or something for being dead last to open the gift from my SS? With my recent moving and various travels and all I was a bit tardy in opening it. But hey, Christmas in February, yay! :D
My SS was viscousmemories :cheerful: Since he knows me pretty well, his gift was totally cool of course - postcard books of 30 Contemporary Women Artists and Architecture 1900 (the latter being photographs. Now not only are these gorgeous, but also apropos since I've been a travelin' fool as of late. However, they might just be TOO pretty to send anyone! Which still works for me 'cuz I can frame 'em and stuff.
Thanks, Tom.

Those sound great Lauri. You could totally frame a bunch of them and make a dramatic grouping.
