So, I know several of the students who are in the Anime Club here on campus. They watch movies on Monday evenings, and I've been invited to come on several occasions. I hadn't done so before, for various reasons, but they were showing Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds last night, which I'd never seen before, so I told 'em I'd probably drop by.

I guess not everyone got the message.

I showed up at the appointed time, everyone was nice and friendly, and all was well. We started the movie.

About 10 minutes later, there was a late arrival -- a former student of mine, no less. He apparently wanted to make a grand entrance. He burst into the darkened room, took a deep, dramatic breath, and announced, "It smells like LOVE in here!". It was pretty clear that he meant to imply that the lot of us were engaged in some sort of orgy. He started to expand on this when he saw me sitting there.

Even in the darkened room, you could see him go pale. In a second or so, several emotions flickered over his face -- surprise, confusion, terror.

"I'm such an idiot!" he squeaked.

Everyone else (including me) thought it was just-about the funniest thing we'd witnessed in forever.

He spent the entire rest of the movie muttering "I'm such an idiot" and threatening his fellow anime buffs that if they ever again fail to warn him that a professor is present, he'll kill them.

All in all, it was a pretty enjoyable evening. For most of us, anyway.

Cheers,

Michael

Heh. Poor guy; I feel a bit sorry for him, really. I'm betting they never let him live it down.

It's funny how students sometimes react to professors. It's not like I was offended or anything, after all -- I thought it was hilarious.

A few years ago, I was teaching a Zoology class. As is my wont, I brought live animals to class whenever possible. Usually, this meant going out the weekend before and catching live critters to bring to the class. When we were getting to the unit on Amphibians and Reptiles, a couple of students asked if they could accompany me on my expedition. I was more than happy to oblige, so I picked up Erin and Neeley in the college van at the appointed time and we set out for a nearby park in search of frogs, salamanders, lizards, turtles and snakes.

I spotted a good-sized Water Snake (Nerodia sipedon) lounging on the bank of a stream, so I crossed a log that happened to be conveniently crossing the stream, hoping to catch the snake. Neeley decided to follow, but slipped and fell into the stream. "Oh SHIT!" she yelled. Then she cried, "I can't believe I just said that in front of my professor! I'm going to fail for sure!"

I assured her that I'd heard much worse, and that I really wasn't offended.

It's funny because, no matter how much they may like you, a lot of students seemed to be convinced that there's something fundamentally ... different ... about their professors -- as if they aren't quite human or something. Occasionally, it can be amusing.

Funny!

So, how was the movie?
Pretty good. I'm not sure it was exactly what I was expecting, but it was certainly well worth watching. I'm not planning to rush out and buy a copy, though.

Cheers,

Michael

And if you let the truth slip, Orbital Command is going to be very, very annoyed.

That is too funny!

Acutally, I feel his pain. I went to see the head boss today to get him to approve some paperwork and I walked in and started having a conversation with him when it then hit me he was on speaker phone and actually not talking to me at all. Of course then I had to stand there while he finished thinking of how much of an idiot I am :blush2:

Heh...

I was once sitting at my desk in the community campus where I used to teach. The advisors desk was right behind me, and she was talking to a woman about her classes for the following semester. The advisor suggested a history class, and the woman said 'no.' She explained that "Dan _____ teaches that class!" ...and so she didn't want to take it. So, the advisor (who briefly made eye contact with me) tried to find her a replacement that would fill the same requirements. They bounced around the schedule and found another one. Again, no, because I taught it. Finally, when one of mine came up for the third time, the woman explained that she didn't want to take any of my classes because she had hard that I would automatically flunk students if they were just 15 minutes late one time.

It was at that point that I burst out laughing, as did several of the staff members in the immediate vicinity.

Was it true?

No.

Actually you could have missed 6 out of 15 classes in any given semester and still earned an 'A'. Honestly, my attendance policy was a joke by any university standard. In that context though, I was the tyrant of Chinle campus, a truly evil man by all accounts. Upon encountering me in the hall, one of my students literally screamed and went the other way.

:muahaha:

...ah, the good old days.

TLR's posts made me laugh, I've heard the majority of my professors swear at least once in class.
