View Full Version : Greetings and Salutations...

I just registered tonight after another member (who shall remain anonymous since I might not be liked here :P ) mentioned spending some time on this site. I'd checked it out before, but I thought I'd finally register and see what its all about. I know some of you probably know me from another site ( *ahem* ), so if you've got a beef with me, I'd prefer we get it over and done with in this thread so we can post amicably in the rest of the forum. :)

Anyway, hello, salut, and "howdy" again... be seeing you all around the forums soon!

I can see why you wouldn't be liked "there." But why wouldn't you be liked "here"?

Obviously some people carry a grudge or simply wait to express their hatred, frustration, anger, etc. once they've got access to a venue that allows them to express such without repercussions. I'd experienced it at two other forums so I'm inclined to think I might get the same reaction here given some of the member names I've see.

Anyway, I started a thread on Texas Hold 'em... are you a player by any chance? I'm interested in talking some poker for sure!

Jameseb has had his occasional run-ins with some of the regulars here (myself included), but... I think this forum's atmosphere will be a lot more conducive to productive conversations.

Well James as long as they don't make you a moderator here, I'm sure you'll be fine.

One of the really nice things about this forum is the lack of power structures, hidden gossip forums, and the like; this prevents a lot of the nasty stuff that happens some places.

I imagine that I must be one of the people to whom you are referring, Jameseb, but I don't see much percentage in staging a personal dispute out of the clear blue and with no standing concerns on the table. The board is big enough for the two of us. If you have any specific issues you would like to rehash, then I will respond as I feel appropriate. Otherwise, I bid you welcome to teh board.

Well, I won't go into that. ;) But I welcome the opinions and thoughts of others unencumbered with the worry of retribution.

D, I don't think you have to worry about that.... ;) Besides, moderating one forum is enough for me.

The scary thing, I think, is that it's really more a fear of retribution than repercussions in the general case. So, yeah, this board is a good place for talking.

To make a long story short, jameseb is a moderator over at ChristianForums, which carries with it enough political hell to give him a great deal of history with a lot of people, most of it probably entirely unrelated to any of the people involved. Best to just ignore it, and deal with him on his own merits.

Aahhh I thought I'd seen the name somewhere else before! I don't think I've had any run-ins though.

Someone bring rnmomof7 over here, would ya? Snoochies.

ARGH!!! NO!!!

Not Eric! What has happened here, oh god, it's all ruined.

Nah, just kidding, much love to the Gary Sinse-look chap from CF. Certainly no hard feelings from me. After all, he's only deleted a few of my threads, and I don't think he's even issued me with any actual warnings.

Hmm. Can I talk about CF mod actions here, or is that breaking CF rules? Anyway, I'll refrain regardless.

Now James, or Eric, whichever, I think this place should be okay for you, but there are a few forums you may want to stay clear of -- the Sexuality one for example, there is some truely scary chat in there.

And while I'm being all open and stuff -- I've always found your comment of "I work for the airlines" to be rather cryptic, most people would say "I work for an airline" or something, unless you are a ticket agent or ground crew or something who actually works for more than one airline. Or maybe you are a Federal Air Marshal! We won't tell on you -- besides, the suit gives you guys away I am told. Unless you aren't one. In which case the suit comment is probably inaccurate.

Naw, they're not the same guy. Jameseb is either considerably younger or has a truly outstanding plastic surgeon. :doctor:

I've lurked on many a CF thread at IIDB (even moderated the first few of them), so I'm not unfamiliar with the general history. All in all, I think it's quite ballsy of you to register and post here.

Welcome to FF, Jameseb. :welcome2:

Hi, James. Remember me?

I haven't been to CF in a long time either.

Anyway, welcome. As liv said it is quite ballsy of you to join up. I actually did a double take when I saw your name, forcing coffee painfully up my nose as I tried not to spray it everywhere.

However, despite you banning me and the issues I have with politically biased moderation at CF, this is a different site and I will not take my frustrations out on you. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and perhaps we can even be friends.

Should either dittomonkey911 or brewmama sign up though, all bets [and gloves] are off.

Due to frequent troubles with work, family, friends and the occassional stranger, I spend all to much time going like :banghead: :wall: :hb:

As such, I have no preconceived notions about anyone...even those people I've already met. It's a little disconcerting at first, but eventually you learn to welcome each day as ENTIRELY new. It can be liberating.

Welcome aboard, James. See ya 'round.

Heh. I don't expect to ever see ditto or brewmama; neither of them seems likely, to me, to survive an environment where they aren't extended special privileges and protections.

Brewmama's one of the meanest people I've ever met who professes Christianity. I have never actually seen any theology from her; all I've seen is angry right-wing politics, derisive remarks, personal attacks on innocent bystanders, and the like. I sincerely hope she is a real Christian, because I have never met someone in more need of peace.

I don't think they're mean, they're just ignorant. What gets me is they're continually commenting on legal opinions they never read. dittomonkey is possibly the only one that does read them, but his understanding of them is borderline insane.

The funniest thing I ever saw was dittomonkey arguing that the Fourteenth Amendment was never properly ratified, and then CaDan, who is an attorney, posting about two minutes later saying "Welcome to ignore," or something like that.

And by the way please don't direct your posts at individual posters. It's against the rules. It quite alright to insult them indirectly of course.

He he... I've often wondered what keeps people going back to CF given all the frustration I've seen recounted. I figure in the end it's a combination of the individuals and the drama which makes it hard to just quit cold turkey. (And maybe just a wee drappie of masochism. ;))

Well I've read a lot of CF commentary of HH and IIDB, as well as lurking a bit on CF. I've come across a number of discussions of CF posters and I must admit, James, your handle popped up a couple of times in an uncomplimentary way, although it was by no means the worst criticisms I've seen (I won't mention the CF posters that are legendary for the feelings of antipathy they appear to inspire).

I'm intrigued therefore, to find out who you are on a site not specifically concerned with either athiesm or Christianity. That said, there is definitely a surplus of athiests represented here and I think it can only make it more interesting to have more religiously-minded folk.

You can expect quite spirited responses to a lot of traditional religious standpoints on issues here, but don't mistake it for venom always. OK there are one or two people here who really, really take values debates seriously and will probably harbour some personal dislike (as has happened between longstanding posters ) for a time, but I assure you I'm not one of them. Yet, at least. Here, at least. Christ I've gotten involved in some ridiculous flamewars at IIDB. Its like when you hit the net you have to grow up all over again because you're not equipped for the new communication environment.

So far the zero moderation thing has worked quite well at FF, mainly because of the sheer bloody-minded persistence of certain posters who don their flame-retardent suits and just keep trying to moderate the tone of flamewars until people either mend fences, agree to differ or leave in a spectacular huff (I'm not sure if this has happened on FF yet, I may be confusing it with another smallish forum). So our bloodier encounters are yours to peruse :) Thankfully such threads are in a minority.

It does mean that no topics are taboo, so forgive us in advance if you end up reading things that make you want to wash your eyes out with soap ;)

Welcome to FF :D

I haven't been back much since I got here, but it's really not as bad as everyone makes out. You have to be a little more careful not to offend, but it's no biggie. Probably a good thing in a lot of ways :P The draconian power of the staff is quite impressive, however. Right now I've got a current warning because I told a fellow member I couldn't work out whether they were male or female (Me and the other poster get on very well, for all they refuse to friggen tell me the answer to that question :fuming: He/she thinks it's so funny.). Why that is deserving of a warning continues to confuse me :P Perhaps it's because that particular mod whose name I won't mention (nah just kidding RNMOMOF7) I petitioned the senior admins to have removed. For some reason she seems to have taken it personally

:D

But aside from that it's cool. It's good to actually hear arguments from a very large group of people who are quite often extremely fundamentalist. The other funny thing is you go into the Christian-only forums (of which there are many :P ) and you see all the Christians in there saying how General Apologetics (where the rest of us hang out) is so vile and they'd never dare go there and it isn't safe for children etc. Now everyone here is saying how they stay the heck away!! It's a CHRISTIAN forum! How bad do you think it could be?? :P

Nah check it out. It's fun. But I like FF much better right now :)
