View Full Version : Aphrodisiacs

Dear God, I hope I spelt that correctly!

I got a book for Christmas entitled "Intercourses" - it's divided up by ingredients that legend holds as aphrodisiacs. Some ingredients were "like, duh" such as chocolate, honey, and mussels. Some surprised me - who knew that black beans and rosemary were revver-uppers?

This got me thinking. Aphrodisiac ingredients are all fine and well, but I'm sure that there are plenty of dishes out there that inspire uh, feelings of well-being without including this fancy-schmancy stuff.

So, let 'er rip. What meals/dishes/experiences have you had that really made you want to fuck? Be precise in the details, please - I have seriously considered opening a restaurant along these lines (when I'm older) and you'll never know how your story could...inspire me ;).

I honestly can't think of a single foodstuff that has ever made me want to fuck. I've had plenty of sensual gastronomic experiences, foodgasms and whatnot, but they were contained, sexy in and of themselves, you know?

Along those lines, a certain roasted garlic and brie (;) ) soup is one of my favorite sexy foods. If it counts, I'd be glad to post the recipe.

Yes, please tell us about your foodgasms (I'm such a voyeur). And yes, please post your recipe so I can add it to my "livius drusus" category in my notebook.

I was gonna put ' ::Groans:: ' in response to this truly terrible pun.

But then I decided in the context of the thread...it might get a teensy bit misinterpreted...

Here's your namesake, Bree. It's silken, savory and absolutely delicious. It takes some effort to make but its lusciousness is worth every minute. (Have you ever read Like Water for Chocolate? This is one of those kinds of recipes.)

Roasted Garlic and Brie Soup

2 heads garlic, unpeeled cloves
6 Tblsp olive oil
1 med. onion, finely diced
2 celery stalks, finely diced
1 carrot, finely diced
7 oz. brie, rind removed, cut into pieces
1/4 cup flour
6 cups chicken stock
1 Tblsp chopped fresh oregano (1/2 tsp dried)
1/2 Tblsp fresh thyme (1/4 tsp dried)

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Place garlic in glass baking dish; drizzle with 2 Tblsp oil. Cover with foil and bake until golden and tender (30 min.). Cool on rack. Heat rest of oil in heavy large saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and saute until translucent (10 min.). Add celery and carrot and saute for 10 min. Add flour and stir for 3 min. Gradually stir in stock. Bring to boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to med.-low and simmer until soup is slightly thickened, stirring occasionally (15 min.). Peel garlic and transfer to a food processor. Add 1 cup soup. Puree until smooth. Return mixture to saucepan. Stir in oregano & thyme. (Can be prepared one day ahead; cover and refrigerate.)

Bring soup to simmer over med.-low heat. Gradually add brie, stirring until melted after each addition. Season soup to taste with white pepper and salt.

Sounds delicious, liv. If I ever have money again I think I will try this one. I very rarely follow a recipe exactly (unless I am working in a restaurant), so it'll be a variation. Maybe substitute a red bell pepper for the carrot (I don't care for carrots).

Although I tend to avoid unroasted peppers because they disagree with me tender insides, I imagine that would be a delicious substitution. :yup:

There isn't a food in existence that makes me horny. On the contrary, a big meal makes me less horny and less energetic. I always tell women I'm dating who aren't ready to sleep with me yet that if they keep me full of food and beer I won't bug them for sex.

Hey liv, I thought this might interest you. We had this soup as part of a five course Thanksgiving dinner a couple years back.

Blue Cheese Soup

1/2 stick butter
3 onions, sliced
2 T all purpose flour
4 cups chicken broth
6 ounces blue cheese, crumbled (preferably Maytag) :yup:
2/3 c. heavy cream
dash of nutmeg
salt & pepper
croutons and chopped parsley to garnish

1. In a saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add the onions and cook slowly until they are soft.
2. Add the flour and stir over low heat until all the flour is absorbed and slightly cooked. Gradually stir in the chicken stock, making sure there are no floury lumps left.
3. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat and stir in the crumbled blue cheese, the cream, and nutmeg. Salt and pepper to taste. Pour into individual serving bowls and garnish with croutons and chopped parsley. Serve with warm French bread and butter and a glass of wine.

Oh man, that looks like a sure foodgasm. I'm totally making that. :homdrool:

P.S. - Do you have a wine recommendation? Blue cheese is a hard thing to match.

I've had blue cheese with red and it left a really weird taste in my mouth. White just tastes like water after having some blue cheese.

Perhaps a sweeter wine? I know nothing about wines, but I think a sweeter white wine might work...only because I enjoy blue cheese with apples. Sure, the apples aren't really that sweet, as I prefer Granny Smiths. So, I guess a sweet/tart white wine?

I've encountered the occasional red that could withstand contact with gorgonzola -- namely a Shiraz of some kind, and my favorite red of all time, Sandrone's Barbera d'Alba -- but I'm not sure if they could take the hit of an entire blue cheese soup.

IIRC, we served Beringer's White Zinfandel with the soup. The sweetness of the onions cuts some of the tang of the blue cheese, so a less sweet red like the Zin worked well.

Anything with cephalopods in it.

Or sea cucumber. Oh, the first time I had fresh Holothuroid dredged up straight from the sea bottom and cleaned and quick-fried while it was still twitching...

Or trout straight from an alpine stream...

A big bucket of steamed clams...

Dang. I don't want to have sex, I want to eat.

I have that same cookbook--it was a bridal shower present. It's pretty.

Pretty much any food over which you can make googly eyes at your partner counts as an aphrodisiac in my book. :inlove:

You and your cold weather bias. Mediterranean trout, stuffed with fresh thyme and lemon wedges, roasted whole in a wood-burning oven and filleted tableside with perfect technique... Now that's sexy.

That Brie and onion soup? And the blue cheese soup? :homdrool: I LOVE soups that involve cheese. I've never felt a stir in the loins in response to them, but they are so. good.

IIRC, we served Beringer's White Zinfandel with the soup. The sweetness of the onions cuts some of the tang of the blue cheese, so a less sweet red like the Zin worked well.
I made a red-hot lamb curry the other night and it seemed to call for a pink and friendly wine. So I bought a bottle of Beringer white Zin... and good gawd, that stuff was awful. It tasted like Love's Baby Soft mixed with vinegar and about a pound of sugar. Am I insane, or did I just buy a bunk bottle?

What to serve with the blue cheese soup? I'd bring it forth as an appetizer, in wee individual cups with some teeny rye crackers, and allow the guests to finish their Martinis while eating it before moving on to a light-ish but stimulating main course and an interesting bottle or two... I think blue cheese and clear liquor are a match made in heaven. And who knows, they may just get you laid.

You know I didn't really think I liked Blue Cheese, until I met Chef.

(We called him Chef, I don't think he was)

I was working on a TV show called Celebrity Treasure Island (sort of a Survivor type show) and we were staying on a deserted island in Fiji - we all slept in tents and so on. But I had some fantastic meals there courtesy of Ian, the location manager and chef. He had a lot of blue cheese he put it in all sorts of dishes and they were great.

The other fantastic meal I had on that island was a freshly caught Parrot Fish (http://www.rheafamily.com/albums/other/Dcp_5275.jpg) simply gutted and cooked over the embers of an open fire by the local Fijians who acted as boatmen and runners for the crew. They also made a few fantastic curries that I sampled. No idea what was in them, but I found this odd little page (http://www.fijibure.com/namatakula/food.htm) of Fijian recipes...

(Edit: Looking through that page, I am reminded that I also had some GREAT Kokoda on in Fiji. I love that stuff.)

As for aphrodisiacs foods, well. I dunno.

I honestly can't think of a single foodstuff that has ever made me want to fuck.

I can't think of a single foodstuff that has ever made be not want to fuck.

Ahh well, there are plenty of mouthfuls of air (or lungfuls, I do breathe through my nose) that have not made me want to fuck, but as yet none that have made me not want to fuck.

So, once a woman eating a pomegranate told me that they are famous for being aphrodesiacs. I didn't catch the hint.

Hmm. I can't think of any particularly sexy foods. Smells, sure. Wood smoke is a big turn-on for me. (Cigarette smoke is just the opposite.)

OK, I made this soup today. It was quite luscious, but I may have made it a bit too salty (I didn't have any chicken stock, so I used some bouillon powder). Know what else I think would be good in it? Finely diced mushrooms.

livius drusus
01-16-2005, 03:58 AM
Yum. What kind of mushrooms did you have in mind? Just your standard button of something more earthy?

It was salty before you added any at the end, then? I wouldn't think bouillon would do that to it, really. Perhaps next time you could dilute it if you don't have any stock around.

Glad you found it luscious nonetheless. :yup:

And how about a copper or nutbrown ale?

Actually, I've never run across any food that "turns me on" sexually. It's usually a visual of a nude or semi-nude female obviously willing and interested in ME.

Like GD, I tend to slow down and become snuggly with a big meal.

I have, however, had what I think is being referred to as "foodgasms". These have always been exclusive of sexuality, but descriptive of the sensations around the mouth and their similarities to sensations focused in the genitals during sexual release.

The venison and chantrelle Stroganoff at Rasputin's in St. Petersburg fit the bill. As did the plain ol' beef and mushroom Stroganoff at the Temple Bar beer garden, across from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, outside the Kremlin.

The triple-layer Rueben sandwich from the now nonexistant Rueben's 5 in Portland.

The smoked meat sandwich (lean) from Schwartz's in Montreal.

Butternut squash ravioli with the white wine cheese sauce at Il Fornari in San Francisco.

The handmade French onion soup with bread and cheese from an obscure bagel bakery outside the citadel walls in Ville de Quebec.

New York cheesecake from an obscure deli in Santa Cruz, California.

My first tall glass of ice-water in an obscure German restaurant, after a month in Asia.

A homemade apple pie, made with Gravenstein apples, still warm from the oven.

My mother's potato soup.
