I was poking around the forum (:butthead: huhhuhhuh...) when I noticed that "Corollary" is misspelled in this quote:

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." "Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.
~ Clarke's Third Law, Benford's Corolary ~

Just thought I'd let ya know.

I don't correct spelling in quotes, either ones from members of the board I'm posting in, or in direct quotes cut and pasted from other sites. I suppose I could, I just don't think it's a direct quote if I don't leave the spelling errors. Am I right or wrong to not correct the errors?

This thread is about a misspelling in a quote in the quote generator at the top of the forum index, not a quote in a post. I personally leave quotes as I find them, or add [sic] after misspellings (when necessary for continuity... I'm not big on doing it to mock. But then, I'm not big on mocking and I think I'm better than anyone who mocks.)

I saw this one in one of the generated quotes today:
" Live as if your were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." attributed to Gandhi.

"How much wood can a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" should read "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

That's the pun. wood. would.

Who is Some Smirky Asshole, anyway?

edit: the answer, by the way, is "A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood." Just so's ya know.

I learnt it slightly differently:

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could and would chuck wood?
As much wood as a woodchuck would chuck, if a woodchuck could and would chuck wood.

I honestly always thought it was:

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

And that's all I remembered of it...

Any way you look at it, the "can" in the oringal quote totally throws off the rhyme scheme.

Oh, no doubt. And it actually bugs me everytime I see it. But I'm lazy. :)

Actually that's not quite right. It's apparently 700 lbs. (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_083a.html)

This might be a thread combo, as it were: "Misspeeling in a quote" together with "Frequently Misused Words":
One of the perils of democratic elections is that they allow those who are easily mislead to make major decisions. It's not necessary to fool all the people all of the time, just enough of the people at the right time.

Oh! I noticed this one today, but I'm glad I checked to see whether it had already been mentioned, because it had. ;)
Live as if your were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.

The word 'Go' defines us now. Everyone, into the pool!

~ The Tic ~

I'm pretty sure that should read "The Tick" as in the insect, not the nervous condition.
