The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/)
I had no idea this was in the works until I saw a teaser for it at the theater. It shows a picture of the earth from space which just EXPLODES and then it says "Don't Panic". I about shit! Hell Yeah! Coming May 6. It's a Buena Vista picture, but at least the bloke who plays Dent is English.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (http://chocolatefactorymovie.warnerbros.com/)
At first I was upset when I found out this one wasn't going to be a musical, but then I found out it was a Tim Burton project. With original music by Danny Elfman, of course. Sweet!

#1 - I can't wait either.
#2 - One question: Why?

The other we discussed here (http://www.freethought-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1007). :)

Eep! 2 replies in like 2 seconds! I'll add this in a new post rather than an edit then.
Upon viewing the trailer, perhaps my source that Charlie isn't a musical was incorrect. Can't tell. (I haven't followed the link yet)
Release date for Charlie: July 15. (both are USA release dates, forgive my ethnocentricism, please.)

You still need to read the trilogy. All five books of it. As if you had anything better to do.

I'm not touching that thread. I :beating: the original. I :hearts: Tim Burton. I  Danny Elfman. And I can't fucking wait! :) (I really hope it's a musical)

If you don't read the book, you likely won't get the full impact of the "gin and tonic" joke.

I'm afraid that's a price I might have to pay. I'm a slow reader and I already have about 50 other books on the waiting list. :)

I'm not so sure about HHGtG, even though I loved the trilogy. I mean, when I found out that they'd added some characters and changed the story ... I dunno, I feel like I'm going to be disappointed. I'm going to try not to have too high expectations, although I am curious about it.

Between the radio series, the double record album, the books, the stage play, and the television series, the story has been vamped and re-vamped so many times that there really isn't any original for the film to stick to. Such is the nature of HHG. I plan to take it at face value.

Reminds me of "Forrest Gump". The movie was not at all faithful to the book, in fact the movie was much better, which by my count is pretty rare. For example, in the book, Gump owned a shrimp farm, not a shrimp boat. But in the movie, one of the funniest scenes is Gump jumping into the water from his moving boat when he sees Lt. Dan on the pier, leaving his boat with no one on board and still under power. I peed my pants laughing at that one.
Um, what was my point here. Never mind.

The whole thing began as a radio series - Douglas Adams worked in local radio which, according to Arthur Dent, is not as boring as it sounds. The radio series, the books and the old television series were all brilliant. I missed most of the new radio series unfortunately. I, too, am looking forward to the film.

I'd be apprehensive too, if Douglas Adams hadn't written the script himself, and if the casting weren't so damn inspired. I mean, Mos Def as Ford Prefect? Brilliant. (And I'm not just saying that because Mos makes me feel kinda funny, either.)

I haven't read the books either so I don't know from Ford Prefect, but I've got to give a big ol' second to the whole Mos Def makes me feel kinda funny thing.

Feel kind of funny, as in deliquesced into a quivering puddle of pure lust funny. Also he is funny, and also he is perfect for Ford. I was definitely of two minds on the HHGTG-as-Hollywood-movie thing, until they announced the cast.
Sam Rockwell is perfect for Zaphod too. I heard that originally Robert Downey Jr. was supposed to essay Mr. Beeblebrox, and he would have been good too, but apparently he was being too much of a whiny diva and they axed him. I would have loved to see Eddie Murphy do Zaphod, but Sam will do admirably.

Wait. Shrimps are farmed?
A friend of mine used to work on a shrimp farm in Tamil Nadu.
The number of strange creatures reared in aquaculture projects is pretty surprising. Crustacean farming of various sorts is common worldwide. Otherwise the long list of creatures farmed includes alligators, frogs and leeches (yes, leeches - for medicinal purposes).
Presumably (to bring all this into the context of the thread) babel fish are farmed somewhere in the galaxy. Somebody should check the guide...

Okay, here is something interesting. The part of Marvin, the Paranoid Andriod will by physically acted by Warwick Davis, a.k.a. The Leprechaun and Willow, but will be voice-portrayed by Alan Rickman, a.k.a. Sheriff of Nottingham, Metatron, Dr. Lazarus, one sexy English motherfucker. Why is it interesting? Because both actors have portrayed professors at Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Coincidence? Hmmm...

Well, with Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy, and Martin Freeman, a significant proportion of the cast of Love Actually is also making an appearance in the Hitchhiker film. Alan Rickman's voice is going to be perfect for Marvin - but I somehow didn't ever see Marvin as a three-foot-tall robot; I saw him as something more like a rust C3PO.
We just got the audio CDs of the Guide from Amazon.co.uk, where they have the CDs of the actual radio series (and the same actors doing the parts of the Guide that weren't originally on the radio); Amazon.com seems to only have the ones where the stories are being read. Brings back some memories!

New trailer for HHG2G movie. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/home/home.html/104-6545519-8915908) In an unusual move for the film industry, they've moved up the opening date to April 29.

When I went to see Sin City Friday night, there was a new trailer for Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It made me even more eager to see it. It looks like the special effects are going to be spectacular.
