Note for the uninitiated: a mashup is what happens when someone with too much time on their hands and access to a lot of fancy music-editing software auditorily smooshes together two or more pop songs in order to create an entirely new pop song. In many cases, the result is much greater than the sum of its parts.

So what are your favorite mashups?

Mine is, without a doubt, Christina Aguilera vs. Jet, "(Are You Gonna Be My) Dirrty Girl". Oh my God, this thing ROCKS. I downloaded it on a fairly obscure tip, and then I played it on repeat and bounced around my house for like three hours straight. It is just amazing. You can get it here; (http://mashmix.com/xoops/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=3) scroll all the way to the bottom.

I also have a soft spot for "Closer to da Club", which is a mashup of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" and Fifty Cent's "In da Club". It works beautifully. It's a little weird hearing Fiddy drawling "Hey yo shawdy... it's ya birthday... we gon' pawty like it's ya birthday" over Trent's infamous four-on-the-floor synth beat. But it's great, I promise.

And for newcomers to the wonderful world of mashups, the two tracks to get are "A Stroke of Genius" (Christina Aguilera vs. the Strokes) and "Smells Like Booty" (Destiny's Child vs. Nirvana). Both available on an illicit filesharing network near you, and both so fabulous you can't stand it.

Is that mashup of Closer really from NIN? Or Joy Division's original? Because I've heard the latter. I also heard something using Bauhaus's Bela Lugosi's Dead. The record store guy was quite impressed that I knew that ... I suppose most other customers were (a) younger and (b)South African. But I generally don't rate these efforts above the originals. (See, I think of them as corruptions or outright thefts of originals rather than new works. :))

That Dirrty Girl track kicks 5 kinds of ass. Amazing! Am I going to have to be all file sharing and cool to to dig up more of these? So far I've managed to avoid that fate.

Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" is not a cover of Joy Division's "Closer". Same title, totally different songs.

This is a very cool concept I'd never heard of.

I actually like Christina's Dirrty on its own better, but the Eminem over various TV themes was pretty funny. I'll have to look around for some more of these.

I was pretty sure I'd never heard Ian Curtis tell me he wanted to fuck me like an animal.

More's the pity.

Actually, NIN did cover Joy Division; their extremely turgid and uninteresting (and unaccountably popular) cover of "Dead Souls" appeared on the Crow soundtrack. From this, two facts can be gleaned: nobody, no matter how talented, should ever attempt to cover Joy Division, and if Trent wants to cover anything he should stick to Pigface and Queen.
