View Full Version : I love the Internet

I travel around the web looking for boards or blogs to keep my brain occupied the several hours a day I have no immediate work to do.

Through one parenting board -that makes non-stop fun of another parenting board (I am a member at both but rarely contribute much)- I was linked to this blog (http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2008/01/reactions_to_the_schechter_and_grether_v.php) and that guy wrote this sentence, which cracked me up.

More like not conducive to woo-friendly board contributors maintaining their little bubble of mutually supportive antivaccination wingnuttery.

I love the Internet, always something fun going on.

Both the internet and forum drama are wonderful things, indeed.

Oh, yes, the Internets can be great fun.

I've posted about it before but there's this one site created to bash on Television Without Pity's forums. Then that site splintered off into this other site that bashes on the TWoP bashers.

The latter started off as a good-natured poke at the original splitters, but then things got serious with nasty conversations and finger pointing. It's all calmed down now but boy, it was some good voyeuristic reading back in the day. ("Last year" in 'net speak.)

My favorite forum war was a small skirmish, but a beautiful one. A website called Pastor Tammy's Full Gospel Ranch was run by a guy posing as a female pastor whose church was a trailer out in the desert. It was staffed by various lonely ladies who were always happy to serve the lord, or various gentlemen who came to pray at the Ranch. Pastor Tammy eventually visited the XXX Church, which is of course an antiporn ministry disguised as a porn site pretending to be a church. The whole point was to catch people who were surfing for porn and try to talk them out of it. Pastor Tammy and several of her faithful were heavily engaged in debunking the absolute bullshit advice that the XXX Church was giving (I remember it included for example instructions that a wife should always consent when her husband wants sex, because otherwise he might seek porn or worse. ...idiots!) The XXXChurch faithful didn't take too kindly to the criticism, not the least of reasons being that PastorFreud was among them and he kicked ass all over the pretentious peudo-counseling they offered. So, some of the faithful from the XXX Church then visited the Full Gospel Ranch to fire back. Both Pastor Tammy and the guys from the Triple X Church would go to porn conventions (I think she was there to counter them.) And it went back and forth for awhile, good fun was had by all ...all that I care about anyway.

So it was a forum war between a fake ministry that was really a pro porn site and a fake porn site that was really a ministry.

...Some things are just too perfect.

I wish I was there to witness that. I have found the conflicts between He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and VM to be quite entertaining. What makes it so entertaining is how HWMNBN's behavior makes him look like an unmitigated ass. Unfortunately with him on my ignore list, it is harder for me to read his vitriol when he decides to engage in one of his drive by rants.

Speaking of fun, read this blog (http://holyembersofdreams.blogspot.com/) (yes, voyeuristic, but THEY put it in the 'net for all to read so I do)

Anyway, these people were really into their rabbit (fave line about the rabbit "All his long life he had rarely uttered more than contented murmurs and clucks, or the low grunts of sexual desire..."). Apparently they believe the baby she is supposedly pg with (she refuses all medical interventions including pregnancy test) is a reincarnation of their dead rabbit. I don't know if this belief is revealed in the blog, but she mentions it on mothering.com.

Also, they do monthly menstrual blood rituals in the garden, and she talks to trolls.

Kooky fun

I post at The DIS Discussion Forums - DISboards.com - Powered by vBulletin (www.disboards.com), mostly in the Families section. Is that the boards you are talking about?

So hubby just mentioned to me a possible opportunity to buy a small sailboat (like tiny, to learn how to sail). That made me think of my friends from Vegas who sold all their shit and retired on their sailboat about 5 years ago. I wondered if they had a blog or something, so looked up their names and voila, found them on a sailing page where they update periodically! Last time they posted they were in Roatan Honduras! I emailed them and hope to hear back

I still haven't found anything on the internet quite as hilarious as the massive Neon Genesis Evangelion shipper war some odd years ago (right around the time said series ended and wasn't very well resolved).

This shit raged over every even remotely anime-based message board and many that weren't, unleashing over 9,000 megatons of nerd rage over which anime character was supposedly looking at which with puppy dog eyes. Solid Fucking Gold.

Then again, I'm thinking maybe the Harry Potter fallout is better, I just can't be arsed to go find enough of it.

I think the "HermionePotter" site is now gone. Shame, they were AWESOME. You have never seen any people so unhappy that some guy ended up with some girl.

I love trying to track things and people down.

Dude, shippers have been a staple source of internet amusement for eons. You should see all the CloudxAerith fallout from Final Fantasy VII and its sequels. I didn't know just how deep the rabbit-hole went until today. (check THIS out: Lulz aplenty! (http://destinyfailed.blogspot.com/))

Also, pick pretty much any anime and there's almost guaranteed to be a shipper war somewhere.

The internet provides me with gif humor like the following:

The only problem is I'll save it and when an appropriate situation arises I'll completely forget about it.

I've seen something similar with a more recent bit of entertainment. If you ever desire to find some lulz look up Zutara and Kataang. I promise you that you will not be disappointed with what you find. There are many lulz to be had there.

I got an email from my living-on-a-sailboat friend! They are still in Honduras and she is doing reef surveys for a conservation organization and posting their underwater videos at National Geographic and the REEF website.

She had a horrible Palm Pilot mishap and lost all of her contacts at some point their first year out, which is why I never heard from her. She was thrilled to be found and hopes to be back in the US in the next 2 years

Yay for finding people online

The Internet helped me become a bit of a shut-in, apart from work. But recently its helped bring an end to that. Last year I hooked up with dozens of people in London that I would otherwise have missed the opportunity to see, without the 'net. And more recently (this weekend) I hooked up with two old friends in one day, thanks to the 'net. Gonna see them again on Thursday.

Coo. As big and impersonal the internet can be, it does also hold the potential to connect people in ways no other medium can. I know I have met people on the internet that I am glad to have known and never would have met otherwise.

The 'net has widened my world and my eyes. I've connected with old friends, classmates, former girlfriends, and relatives via those tubes. I think I've learned more in the last 15 years of being on the world-wide web than I had in the previous 20, maybe even ever. I love the internet.
