World Press Photo Competition winners announced (+photos) - 09 Feb 2008 - NZ Herald: Lifestyle News and Reviews from New Zealand and around the World (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/6/story.cfm?c_id=6&objectid=10491527)

An image of an emotionally and physically spent US soldier in a bunker in Afghanistan by Britain's Tim Hetherington for Vanity Fair magazine won the top World Press Photo prize for news photography on Friday.
Judges described the photo as an image that shows "the exhaustion of a man - and the exhaustion of a nation," adding people everywhere were tiring of the world's numerous conflicts.
"We're all connected to this. It's a picture of a man at the end of a line," said jury chairman Gary Knight, describing it as an "intelligent photograph".

That basketball one looks painful.

Not sure I understand the 'Invisible Town' one. Wiki has the town listed as fictional.

An interesting article about how the images were picked, foto8 - Unconcerned but not Indifferent (http://www.foto8.com/home/content/view/377/216/)

As well as interesting developments in the comments section about possibly unfairness in the selection and a bit of "non-censorship" censorship. If you want to read about people complaining.
