What field are you in?
As someone with extensive experience that area (unfortunately), my advice is take a day or so to get it out of your system; just brood, be pissed off and whatever. If you have a severence package, you are probably okay for some period of time, but don't wait until near the end of that before starting to look. After you finish your brooding, it's time to update your resume and start establishing contacts for new jobs. Contacts can be: Monster.com and other job websites, want ads in the local paper, recruiters/headhunters, temp employment agencies, AND don't forget to network through your friends, colleagues and family. I've used all these methods to get new jobs.
You'll get through this. The bad news is, we are in a recession (I don't care what the official position is, we just are). The good news is that I'm pretty sure we're already pulling out of it. I'm an engineer and I've been getting a LOT of hits from Monster.com, moreso than, say, a year ago. I think engineering is one of the indicators of economic activity (before you can build it you have to design in), so hopefully you'll find something soon.
This can really suck. I know. But dwell instead on the positives that can result from this kind of forced change. Don't dwell on the past; but instead look foward.
You can do it!

Wow. I've been there more than once.
FWIW, here's hugs and friendhsip going out to you vremya.

That sucks, vremya. So does looking for work, but there are good things about not going to work every day.
I hope your unemployment is long enough to enjoy, but too short for clinical depression. :)

I've been out of work for nearly four months, so I can feel your pain. Although, I wasn't laid off, my boss was an abusive person and I told him to shove it. I'd rather be poor than a slave... but that's just me.
You live in a much more economically stable area than I was at, so I'm sure you'll bounce back even better than before.

Shit.
That sucks.
I hate looking for work. I feel like such a....pimp.
I got "laid off" last summer....I may be this summer, too. I tried to look at it as an opportunity.
That said, I hope your time of separation from the ship will be short, and soon you'll be manacled to a new oar on a different ship, slaving the remainder of your life away.
Doohickie....As an assessment of the usual economic processes, the increase in work for engineers is indeed an indicator of increased economic activity in the near future. I believe the lag time was at least a year or two, though.
What kind of engineer?

Thank you everyone for the kind words! Doohickie, you're right, I'll get through this. I wasn't planning on being at this place forever, but I really would have preferred to leave on my own terms. Oh well.

Well, "laid off" usually means at least unemployment benefits.

I sure hope so - I don't see why not, since they're eliminating my position. (Which is pretty shortsighted of them, but it's their funeral.)

Well, I think you should call your boss up and tell him that you're not going to take this shit anymore, and if he insists on treating you this way, then you're not coming back!
(...er, hugs Vrem. I hope you land someplace much better.)

Been there, done that, sold the T shirt. I second the 'enjoy the time off', another job will come round the bend soon.
I finally found a job after 6 months of unemployment, and I'm unejumacated! You can dooo eet! :cheer:

Firstly, I like the way you used Battlestar vocabulary in your thread title. The last season was a bit disappointing, but I'm still looking forward to next season.
Secondly, let me tell you I sympathize with your situation. I've been retrenched before, and there are actually some pro's. For example, on the first day of getting let go at one firm, I took my towel and swimmers to Maloolaba and it was a great day at the beach with big waves (the kind I like).

I made a pan of brownies, so I'm feeling a bit better. And the Wild finally scored and tied the game, so that's helping things.
One of the kitties kicked me in the eye over the weekend (OUCH!) and crying makes my eye hurt, so I'm trying to keep the waterworks to a minimum.
After my boss and the HR drone finished their spiel this morning, they asked if I had anything to say, and I said that as I was very angry, I preferred not to say anything at that point. The two of them looked utterly shocked when I said that. Duh. Did they expect me to thank them?

Last season had its moments, but I agree, it was sort of disappointing. I hope things improve and soon!

The formula for Battlestar Galactica improvement is as follows:
More Number Six, less everyone else! :)
ps- I am pulling for the Flames, especially after what Cujo did to the Sharks!

Yes, they probably did - "Thanks for the wonderful opportunity to have worked here" is standard for some reason. Seriously. And then the HR person and the boss go to lunch, order expensive, and talk about how "badly" they feel about "having" to let you go.
I like your answer better, though- much. The whole "exit interview" thing has never really made much sense, unless there was an explanation of continuing benefits or somesuch.
In any event- I hope the period of downtime is only exactly as long as you want it to be, and not a day longer.

Okay, I just applied for a job, so everyone cross your fingers, send out good vibes, sacrifice a chicken (though not you, godfry), or whatever.

Good luck, but try to find 10 more to apply to, just in case. Much more fun to say, "I'm sorry, I've already found employment" than to find out the only iron you had in the fire isn't so hot.

Oh yeah, I'm definitely looking - this one had a tight deadline, so I had to get my stuff in today.
I'm still feeling numb from Monday, so I'm not really in full job search mode yet. Gotta work up to that.

I'll dance my ritual employment dance for you. It works sometimes. You'll either find a job or there will be a crippling drought. Or both. :belly:

Things will improve next week, vremya. Try to relax and think about something else. Like maybe hoarding clean drinking water.
