Just looked around the window and saw a herd of deer on the hill. I live in town mind you. Though there are some woods left, this area is pretty urban. The neighbor's dog finally spotted them and they ran back into the trees.

I do like the Western NC conception of "town."

I do like the Western NC conception of "town."Most of Boone doesn't have woods like this though. Anyway, the house is in the 'island' between US421, US321 and NC105. Any other direction and all you'd see was buildings and in the distance, mountains.

When I was driving through the Ohio River Valley a couple weeks ago, I saw several heard of 50+ deer. The deer around those parts are smaller but more plentiful than in the NC mountains, you even see some that are half/entirely white.

Those are blacktails, aren't they?

Is that berry canes they were chewing on?

Recently, we had a single doe show up in the downtown park blocks, miles from any forested cover. She had to be rounded up and returned to the forests north of the metro area. It was evident that she was confused and just didn't "grok" what was going on. Talk about a stranger in a strange land.

Those are blacktails, aren't they?I'm not an expert by any means but I think they're white tailed. This is pretty far east of the Mississippi.

Is that berry canes they were chewing on?I've never been up on that hill. The zoom on those photos is as close as I've seen them. There's a park and some nature gardens on the other side of that hill though.

Yeah, those are white tail, you can see the white flag real well in the last picture.

I think that's tall fescue (or some sort of wild grass) shoots left over from last year. Actually, it may be rye too.

the city i grew up in (winnipeg, canada) contains a small urban forest, complete with deer herd. surrounded by relatively busy traffic, mind.
i miss that in a way

Ahhh..The ghost deer. When I lived in California, out in West Marin there was a herd of ghostly white deer. They were said to be descendants of a herd bred by a relative of Napoleon so as to be easily spotted in the thick woods. I would see them as I headed out to the coast- just standing on a ridge in the early morning mist. Sometimes the dew would sort of shine underfoot (hoof) and it was quite the sight.

The blue tint in the photo probably adds to the creepy factor. It was dusk and the lighting turned out weird. I should have adjusted the tint before posting those pics, perhaps.

Oh speaking of ghost deer, I took a few pictures using the nightshot feature and the deer came out pretty spectral.

i miss that in a wayI live on the north side of Atlanta and deer-dodging is a frequent way to liven up your morning rush hour commute!

Nice deer, Yb. I've never seen herds like that before. We only get them in twos and threes.

I live smack in the middle of a bunch of mountains where deer (mule deer, I think) are supposed to be crawling all over the place. Haven't seen hide nor hair of a single one the whole time I've been here. :hmph:

Gorgeous and eery shots, Ymir's blood! It is pretty amazing to see a herd like that in the middle of the more populated area of town. And even better you were able to catch them with your camera. :yup:
